Hi I am a new member, I have secondary type 1 diabetes since having a total pancreatectomy/splenectomy (removal of pancreas/spleen) in April 09. Blood sugars are very erratic, carb counting which is hard but hanging in there.

Hi there Blackberry and welcome to the forum sorry to see you went through the removal of your spleen/pancreas cant of been pleasent for you , they are many on here who carb count me not being one of them but they will be along with some advice soon for you.Erratic BS are very common amongst alot of us it is very frustrating and annoying, what are your typical readings when you test during the day?

Welcome Blackberry. Most of us who got type 1 diabetes as adults have relatively slow onset of symptoms, compared to those who get it as children, and much slower to your rapid onset with removal of pancreas. I'm guessing there was some underlying problem for the pancreatectomy & spleenectomy? In which case, the trauma and / or condition which necessitated removal also take some getting over, in addition to recovering from surgery and getting used to insulin, blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting etc. It really does get easier, almost instinctive (estimating carbohydrate content by sight, for example), although I still get taken by surprise sometimes, 14 years on. What I've found most imporant is deciding what really matters to me and setting about trying to meet those ambitions. So, hanging in there is a good approach!

Hi blackberry, welcome to the forum🙂 Sorry to hear of the reasons why you are here, I imagine that the removal of your pancreas and spleen presents you with more problems than most of us. We do have a couple of members who have had their pancreas removed, so hopefully they can share experiences with you.
