Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello!

I'm Claire, and I live in London.

I was diagnosed with type 1 in October '07, aged 20.

I gulped down a bottle of Lucozade outside the GP surgery before my appointment, because I was afraid that they would miss it. Or perhaps because I wanted it clearly ruled out. Despite absolutely classic symptoms I'm not sure I really believed it myself.

Anyhow - straight to A&E with a ton of keytones.

I thought I'd join up mostly because this is a pretty lonesome disease!

I don't know anyone else with diabetes and speaking in analogy has become really tedious.

I know that most people mean well, but honestly the experience of no-one really understanding what I'm talking about has left me feeling like an angsty teen!

So hello, lovely to meet you all.

Welcome to the forum Claire! If you ever need to vent, this is the place to do it :D
What insulins are you on? xx

Thank you!

I'm on Levemir, which I currently split - 16u in the morning and 6u at night. Though I do fiddle this depending upon what I've been doing.

And Humalog - currently 2.5:1 in the morning and 1.5:1 throughout the rest of the day.

Feels a bit crude though, I feel I'd really benefit from a pump.

hi and welcome ...there is a nationwide group called 'circle D' for 18-30's ...Im sure someone will come and give you their links and contact details x🙂

Welcome to the forum Claire -its a shame you didn't join a few weeks ago as many of the members met up in London.

There are meets organised in different parts of the country have a look in the events forum if you are interested.

Hi Claire. Welcome 🙂

Sounds like you are already well on the ball. Hopefully we can smooth out the sharp edges a bit between us.

Rob

Hi and welcome.

I'm interested in your comment about adjusting your Levemir. Since this is a slow-releasing insulin, you may not see any affect of changes for a day or so - this is certainly my experience with Lantus.

Anyway, the key is a structured testing regime with reasoned analysis, balancing your Humalog with your food intake. Sounds complicated, but you're sure to get the hang of it, if you haven't already.

Read threads and ask questions - we're here to help.

Thanks for the link to Circle D - looks just the ticket. What a shame I missed the meet!

I switched to Levemir from Lantus a couple of months ago because I was frustrated by the lack of flexibility - like you said it does seem to hang around for quite a while, with all changes taking a couple of days. I'm prone to hypos during the night, especially if I've done any exercise at all during the day, and it felt like Lantus was always out to get me!

My DSN recommended I give Levemir a try, and it seems to be an improvement. I reduce the evening dose if I've had a pretty active day and this works well to keep the hypos at bay.

There's so much room for improvement though and so much more to learn from the experience of others - thanks for the welcome! :D

Hope the Levemir spilt twice a day works for you. If not, after a fair trial, there is one more option, which isn't as widely known, as it's an older insulin, Humalin I, but taking it twice daily really suits me, as my activity levels are generally fairly high but do fluctuate and can include endurance events of many hours, even several consecutive days & nights - including walking, cycling, running, kayaking, heavy conservation work, physical care work, shifting heavy outdoor kit etc.

Hi Claire! I'm Siobhan, 23 on Saturday and t1 for 20 years 🙂

I'm also London based - you should join the North London Young Diabetics group - the next meetup is Sat 7th May at a city farm somewhere in central London.

Details are here: https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=115827781765066

It's always fun and a laugh, come along if you fancy it!

Hi Siobhan,

Corr, twenty years.. I feel like I'm a toddler at diabetes..

I live in North London so that sounds like the group for me.

A visit to the city farm sounds ace!
