Hello, hope to finding you all well. I’ve had a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes on 11/10/23, diet controlled . upto now I’ve lost 9lb attempts to loose weight since September and lost 17lb…. I’m struggling, basically told no sugar, low carbs increase fruit and veg cut down on fats…no crisps, no crisps‍ cannot get my head around the carbs business..
I’ve also concentrated on increasing water and walking over 10,000 steps… I have an under active thyroid and a few other conditions, you get older and you acquire another health condition … I do feel better for not eating rubbish , but do get cravings.. and exchanged crisps for a lesser carb/ sugar option decided to not tackle that till after next blood tests . The bloods were 53 , I knew Diabetes would bite me on the bum, family history and also 8 weeks of gestational diabetes… just need a good nosey around the forum, any suggestions greatly received… thank you for taking time to read this post.. I’m a bit bamboozled , take care

Welcome to the forum. Well done on the weight loss so far, but do be careful of fruit as many fruits and fruit juices are high carb and should only be had in moderation, berries are the best as they are lower carb. You could swap crisps for nuts as they are lower carb.
Have a look at this link for some low carb menu plans, good explanation and some do's and don'ts. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
At 53mmol/mol your blood glucose is not too high but should certainly be taken seriously.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is really useful as it gives carb value for various portion sizes of a whole range of food so helps making better food choices.

Welcome to the forum @Hi there

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but well done on your weight loss so far - that’s fantastic!

Many forum members find looking at carbohydrate as a whole is more helpful than ‘of which sugars’, as the body can be pretty speedy at breaking down those longer chains of ‘complex carbohydrates‘ into glucose.

At 53mmol/mol you are towards the lower end of the range where forum members have started (some began their diabetes career in 3 figures), so hopefully with a few relatively modest tweaks to your menu you should see some positive changes to your glucose, levels at your next appointment.

And the weight loss should help with your insulin sensitivity too.

Forum members who opt for a lower carb approach seem to aim for approx 130g of carbs in a day in total (some have less), and many find they have a little more freedom with natural fats - oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado, dairy, olive oil… without scuppering their cholesterol level - but it’s wise to check with your surgery nurse. One of the good things about fats and proteins is they they help you feel fuller for longer. Low carb is not no carb - but it’s helpful to keep,an eye on portion sizes and be on the lookout for lower carb swaps and alternative for some staples.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
