Softly-spoken Sarah Flanagan might not look like a warrior – but the Devon scientist is in the front line of a battle which is helping transform the lives of children around the world.

The 33-year-old genetics expert is based at the University of Exeter Medical School, and is part of a world-leading diabetes research team which is carrying out pioneering work into the condition.

Cutting-edge research over the last decade by Sarah and her colleagues has led to incredible breakthroughs, and means that some children diagnosed with neonatal diabetes can now be treated with tablets, instead of traditional insulin injections.
