Sales of beef dripping surge

I have always preferred beef dripping and lard and butter and chicken fat. It is what I was brought up on. Food through the week was cooked in the fat which rendered from whatever roast meat we had on a Sunday and if more was needed we used lard and dripping for the deep fat fryer (EDIT.... That should read chip pan! We didn't have a deep fat fryer in the good old days). I think more people are realising that demonised animal fats may actually not be as harmful as the alternatives.
I would like to hope that realisation is nothing to do with Trump.

Tim Spector, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King's College London and Honorary Consultant Physician at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation has commented on these claims saying: “Beef tallow is certainly not healthier than seed oils. There’s a huge and unwarranted backlash against seed oils at the moment, but it’s just utter nonsense.”

A single small startup we have contacted has seen the amount of beef tallow they sell go up, possibly to those influenced by the claim.

Britons as a whole are not ‘embracing the MAGA diet’ as has been claimed by some.

Indeed! Absolute nonsense!

At a time when the internet gives us access to so much information, it's painful to watch the dominant rhetoric be that from grifters and charlatans, and even worse when those charlatans are in such positions of power and influence.
 
Could be - the place where the lard should have been stacked high was down to half a box last time I went looking for some.
When I stopped using sunflower oil my skin altered dramatically, and I no longer felt pain when out in the sun without factor 50 sun screen.
Not only no sunburn but I tan!! That is a real alteration as I have had to stay out of the sun for most of my adult life - since I left home and started using sunflower oil rather than eating my mother's cooking - she used lard.
 
As a child beef dripping was a treat when we had had roast beef which we didn't have each week. As a child olive oil came in a tiny bottle purchased from the chemist if we had earache. We loved as a treat sharly cake also known as lardy cake. Lard was used for pastry. For a while we lived in Wiltshire where it was locally popular lots of sugar, lots of fat and dried fruit. However it was a different world. We spent lots of time cycling tree climbing hopscotch and walking. We did not have central heating or fitted carpets and we had stodgy food basically two meat and veg with fish on Friday. We did not snack nor did we have sweets every day. I now tend to use butter olive oil or rapeseed oil but often cook veg without any oil or butter.

I'm interested in other ideas but I would certainly prefer Spector's views to RFK whose views I would not seek out.

Not sure how old you are, but your account is much closer to the reality of th past than the narrative that many online would have you believe. Glad to see you haven't allowed your history to be re-written.

Misinformation? The title only says there is a surge in Lard sales - which there is - and that Britons (in the context of the Americans in the MAGA (Make America Great Again movement) are also moving into the maga diets.

A carefully scripted response from Spector. Very non committal. He says "Beef tallow is certainly not healthier than seed oils". But fails to commit to saying something like "Beef tallow is worse for health than seed oils". Subtle perhaps, but an important difference. Followed by a separate sentence about saturated fats being "linked" to an increased risk of disease. Again a non committed response. No mention of animal fats "causing" disease.

He also says "There’s a huge and unwarranted backlash against seed oils at the moment, but it’s just utter nonsense". There is plenty of expert opinion about how processing oils chemically changes them and that for example cold pressed rapeseed oil is better for you than hot pressed cheaper mass produced veg oils.

We know opinions and evidence change all the time, for example:

Low fat dairy products attracted attention in the 1960s because of the move against saturated fats, as it was believed that they lead to weight gain and increase LDL and cholesterol, which trigger coronary heart disease. Nowadays dairy fats are being recommended.

Cold-pressed is likely going to be better, in each case. However, the contentious issues aren't predicated on comparisons between cold-pressed etc. but between plant fats and animal fats. The preponderance of the evidence is on the side of plant-fats, including seed oils. That's not to say that animal fat can't be incorporated into an overall healthy diet, but the notion that seed oils are the cause of all the world's ills doesn't hold up to any scrutiny.

The main suggestion against seed oils seems to be that they can cause inflammation and that other non seed oils can reduce inflammation?

There are well founded expert opinions on the healthiness that certain plant oils which include good plant oils like advacado and olive oil are better than say seed oils. Also, there's some science on the healthiness in the way the oils are used, e.g for cooking (burning point / free radicals) or dressing/dips. And there is science on the healthiness in how plant oils are harvested and processed (cold pressed). It's not all utter nonsense as Spector suggests.

There is a distinction between vegetable oil and seed oil.

I think it is safe to say that cold pressing will produce a healthier (retain more of the nutrients) oil than hot pressing. Also, for example that the harvesting of unripe olives, makes the oil richer in healthy polyphenols and very high in antioxidants.

I can't however produce any human outcome data to prove that.

Of course, "animal and dairy fat is bad for you" how else can they achieve net zero.

A number of sources suggest seed oils are bad, but they're the kinds of sources which also sell "natural" supplements.

Surprise! Dr. Dhand has a website selling supplements. Is also a fan of RFK Jr, and he and Dr John Campbell are doing a series of videos together on Natural Medicine (there's one on cinnamon for blood sugar control).
