SAN ANTONIO -- A leading diabetes researcher from San Antonio says there?s a better way to manage the disease than the standard of care right now. He?s on a quest to change the hearts and minds of the medical establishment.
Dr. Ralph DeFronzo of the U.T. Health Science Center believes there is a better way to treat patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.
The current standard of care starting people on drugs like Glucophage and sulfonylureas isn?t working well.
?Eventually, these people, most of them, end up on insulin,? DeFronzo explained. ?They gain weight and they?re not very well controlled.?
At the Texas Diabetes Institute in San Antonio, 140 patients have been trying a new approach: triple therapy.
