Cathy Freeman's appearance at Run Melbourne in July will be a showcase of the twin pursuits of her new life: distance running and dealing with diabetes.
Her glittering career as a sprinter - the 400 metres gold medal in the Sydney Olympics the highlight - is over, and unfortunately so too are her days of flawless health. Now she runs events measured in kilometres rather than metres, including her first marathon at the start of the year. And while athletes' diets are always strict, Freeman's status as a diabetic has taken hers to a new level.
''What came as a big surprise when I realised I had diabetes was that I couldn't eat fruits that are high in sugar like watermelon or banana,'' said Freeman, 40.

1 - Why do they have to say it's either from being obese or genetic? Why can't they accept it's a combination of factors? 😡
2 - I never knew she had diabetes.
3- I eat bananas! 🙂
