What are the rules and regs on being a delivery driver and being type 1 diabetic, im getting so confused.

I believe insulin dependent diabetics can drive anything up to 7 tonnes, so you should be OK in that respect, but worthwhile investigating anyway as there may be some restrictions with the limb as marge pointed out...

Usually, limb problems mean you can only drive a specially adapted vehicle, which means you're fine with your own car or van or one provided by employer, but can be tricky to hire on holiday or when yours is being repaired.

It's up to 3.5 tonnes. Unless there's been a maor change recently.

That includes normal transit sized as well as the larger Luton vans without a tail lift.

But it's obviously more complicated than that. 🙂

I genuinely though it was 7, I have not driven a 7 but only because you need to sit an extra test to drive them............

I hired a van a while ago and checked it out. I have driven one many years ago but not sure if the rules were the same then. If thet were, I was v naughty. 😱

It can depends on when your full license was issued!

My wife got her license a couple of years before I got mine, she is allowed to drive 7.5 tonnes. I'm limited to 3.5 tonnes. I can't remember the exact cut-off date but it must of been 95 ish.

I believe that the DVLA sometimes surreptitiously remove the 7.5 category when you update your license for a new photo card or change of address.

I don't believe that they specifically remove the 7.5 tonne for diabetics. The license check for insulin dependants affects all categories.

I've had a licence since about '84 and mine is limited to 3.5t.

I've never had any complications, always had the 3 year renewal, so I assumed it was a change in the law.

I suspect they must of dropped it off at some point for you - a non-diabetic would still have that entitlement (my wife does).

My father is an insulin dependent diabetic and he did drive 7.5 tonnes for a number of years. It was only when the DVLA threatened a complete ban on diabetics driving lorries that he stopped - that would of been about 2005 ish?

It is only for insulin dependant diabetics, yes. 🙂

Not sure about the minibus entitlement now. Used to be up to 12 passengers I think btu Ive never driven one so has never affected me.

Bear in mind, if hiring, the insurers may need a lot of information about you before letting you hire. But always advisable to be honest in case of claims. 🙂

And tell your employer about diabetes requiring insulin (the term I use for this purpose) - just had annual "show us your driving licence" check at work so I can drive Land Rover on road and tractors with trailers round park. No problem at all.

The rules on what weight you can and can't drive are firstly governed by when you actually passed your car test. See this page

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_180694

Sort that out first LOL

hi i agree with this because when i change my licence from italian to the english one i can drive a motorbike but van up to 3.5 and my partner he took the driving licence a few years after me all the european legislation changed and he cannot drive motorbike

Cheers guys. It wasn't for me though =) It was for the delivery driver at my other halfs work. He drives a long wheel base high top van and we were just wondering what the rules are in regards to checks the employer should do/dvla do and the driver should do. Hes been diabetic for over 20 years as far as i know if not longer.
