Relationship to Diabetes

Hi all,

Need some help/advice.

This is the first time I've really had a bad sick day since being diabetic. Last night ate chips from fish and chip shop, but had my own fish from house which was rollmop. Very nice at the time. However, went to be feeling nausea, had a rough night and this morning, vomitted, been nausea ever since and haven't eaten and bearly had a couple of sips of water and managed a glass of tomotoe juice. Any advice please?

What are your blood glucose levels like? Are you able to test for ketones (either with blood ketone test strips or urine ketone test strips)? If your levels go high and you have moderate to high levels of ketones you need to seek help. I wonder if the fish and chips is coincidental, and that you have picked up a bug, or perhaps food poisoning? Sickness can make your levels climb high and you may need more insulin than usual to bring then down to reasonable levels. I think you should call either NHS Direct or an out of hours doctor if you continue to be sick. Have you been taught about 'sick day rules'?

Sorry for all the questions, but they are all things you need to consider when you are poorly. Make sure you stay well-hydrated. Hoping you feel much better soon!

Have you plenty of test strips and ketone strips in. Its important when ill to keep an eye on ketones when you are ill and to seek medical advice if necessary.

I put sick day rules into google and here is the link from Traffod nhs trust. I wanted to find something that would have official information in it.

http://www.trafford.nhs.uk/files/fi...day rules for people with type I diabetes.pdf

The only issue I have with these documents (I have seen them from other health authorities too) is that they specify the number of units of correction insulin to take and I think this information may be unsuitable for some people (it may be far too much for some), so if you haven't been taught what your personal requirements are, then seek medical advice from a professional who can judge based on your own usual doses of insulin.

BG is currently 5.8, haven't tested throughout the day as been asleep for most of it so that's the only reading I have. Do have traces of ketones. No ones gone through sick days with me, only what I first read when I was first diagnosised, i.e. rest up and test BG.

I think its more that fact that I'm not eating that's concerning me, I have taken long term insulin, but not short, and I don't know what to do for the best.

Thanks for the help/tips guys

As long as you are poorly you need to test regularly so you can see if levels rise dramatically for any reason. If they are around 5-7 though it sounds like you are OK. As long as you have your long-acting insulin and your levels of BG and ketones are favourable you should be OK and it shouldn't matter if you are not eating. I was poorly a couple of weeks ago and only managed three slices of toast in three days. 🙂 Hope you are feeling much better soon! Are you feeling any better now, or worse than when you first woke up?

Feeling worse now I'm awake, but been watching the simpsons movie which brightens any day. Shrek will follow soon . Thanks for asking. 🙂

2 of the most underrated films of our time IMO ! :D (especially shrek).

I would imagine the ketones are purely from starvation if your BG stays good. Not sure what to suggest for trying to settle stomach, but fluids are important if you can keep water down. Dehydration will make you feel worse and can raise your BG.🙂
