The true enemies of the NHS are the politicians who lambast its staff, while quietly taking apart the battered institution.

You have to be almost superhuman to work as an NHS doctor or nurse these days. On top of the long hours, the night shifts and the getting up close and personal with the feverish, bilious and germy, there?s the barrage of abuse from politicians and the media to contend with. Nurses are ?too posh to wash a patient?. Doctors are ?greedy?. Both are ?uncaring?. All this for devoting yourself to treating the sick.

In the wake of the Mid Staffordshire Hospital scandal, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt this week proposed offering pay rises to staff who show patients ?compassion, dignity and respect?. Of course these are the traits we want to see rewarded. But it?s the wrong approach. I bet the vast majority of doctors and nurses don?t want compassion-related salaries. What they want is more staff on their wards and less admin.
