A new NHS hotline designed to take the pressure off stretched 999 services has been delayed indefinitely in Cornwall and will not be rolled out in Devon until the autumn.
The 111 number, which will replace the NHS Direct helpline, was due to have swung into action at the end of last month.
However, in the light of a wave of national controversy, health commissioners in the Westcountry have now confirmed a lengthy delay before it is implemented.
Andrew Abbott, NHS Kernow's director of operations, said the service would only get the green light in the Duchy when it was ready.
