Had my bloods taken last Wednesday. Appointment was 9.15am. Results back today, along with a letter asking me to go to surgery this Wednesday at 8.30am to have bloods taken again as potassium has come back as raised. They have said it’s probably likely due to the timing of the sample. Is 45 minutes going to make much difference? I’ve consulted Dr Google and it can signify a kidney problem, but the urine test and bloods show my kidneys are fine! I suspect they’ve maffed up the sample, that’s no consolation to me though, I’m back there at 2.45pm to see GP about a recurring ear problem! Very inconvenient.

On the other hand HbA1c down from 52 to 50, cholesterol down slightly and weight down by a kilo. BP was a bit higher than last year, I expect my review call back on 1st June will be mostly about that and hopefully potassium results will be back and fine. 🙂

Same with mine, Potassium high but the repeat sample a week later and it was fine so who knows. Folate low so now have folic acid pills.

EggyG I hope that you’re potassium is normal with this blood test xx

I have had slightly raised potassium every now and again over the years, but it has gone back down inbetween times.

Hopefully it will be the same for you @eggyg

My lot have said potassium levels can be affected quite a lot by what you have eaten when. According to a quick Google high potassium foods include leafy green vegetables, fish, white beans, avocados, potatoes, acorn squash, milk, mushrooms, bananas, and cooked tomatoes.

We eat quite a lot of mushrooms, leafy veg, squash and beans!

Congrats on the A1c drop 🙂

Hi @eggyg. I was told by my consultant a while ago that potassium sometimes comes back as raised from a GP surgery blood tests due to the way they store the blood after taking it and transporting it to path lab. Maybe that is the cause

Funnily enough since I was hospitalised end of last year with a bowel obstruction, and subsequently diagnosed with a permanent partial obstruction due to adhesions from the surgery I’ve had, I’ve cut right down on my veggies ( it’s difficult as I love most vegetables) as I’m trying to follow a low residue diet, ie low fibre etc. The total opposite to what we have been “ taught” over the years. I don’t eat bananas, avocado or mushrooms as I hate the taste, I don’t drink milk, and I wouldn’t know an acorn squash if I fell over it. That leaves cooked tomatoes, again I don’t eat too many as I’m supposed to stay off seeded fruit and veg as they’re indigestible. White beans, again legumes are a no no, though I do occasionally eat butter beans in a fish stew. Potatoes, which I do eat, without the skin, and fish which I have upped my consumption of as I can’t eat a lot of red meat as it needs to be chewed a lot, and it makes it hard work and inedible in my opinion! So I’m assuming there’s been a faulty sample. Fingers crossed that’s the case as I don’t know what’s left to cut down on! :D
