MORE than 1350 Scots have lost limbs in the past year because of diabetes.

But ministers say many amputations could be avoided, and are launching a new scheme to spot the warning signs earlier.

Diabetes, which affects nearly 250,000 Scots, stops blood flowing properly to the feet. Treating the illness costs just over ?1billion a year.

Experts believe 50,000 people have yet to be formally diagnosed and a further 500,000 are at risk of developing the disease, so the costs could spiral.

The Scottish Government will today launch a scheme called CPR for Feet to give sufferers free foot checks to see if they are in danger of losing limbs. It aims to catch ulcers and other damaging conditions early, reducing the risk of amputation.
