Hi I Am Going To The Eye Clinic On Friday For Retinopathy Screening Has Anyone Been For This? I Have Heard The Eye Drops Sting Is This True As I Am A Little Concerned About It. Thanks Karen

For me personally they do sting. Last time I went the guy said that he could try to do the photos wthout them. he managed to get good pictures so didn't need them, which was great. it's worth asking if they can try and get photos without, if they can't then you will need to have them.

i dont find the drops sting, however i know a guy from my diabetes clinic who says they do so he now has the kids drops administered and has said that they are so much better. might be worth asking for them if you cant get them done without drops at all.

In my experience they do sting - but only for a very short amount of time. Although having read this thread next time I think I'll ask for the kiddies drops!

preparation for retinal screening test

Karen - You may or may not have drops (what did your appointment letter say?), but need to prepare for the consequences - ie don't aim to drive home (although I have cycled home after having dilating drops), and take sunglasses to wear in case it's sunny - otherwise, having dilated (wider) pupils will be uncomfortable. If you don't have drops, then you haven't lost anything.

I had mine done last week and had drops and found they did not sting but that is just me. But you could be difffrant hope all goes well

When I had mine done I had the drops. They did sting, but the most uncomfortable thing was afterwards when I could hardly see for about 2 hours! That was in the summer, and a very sunny day, but I struggled to walk home even with sunglasses on. Don't mean to alarm you - it was ok really, just wholly unexpected -I'll be better prepared for it next time 🙂

Hi, I found that the drops do sting, but personally the stinging wore of within seconds and a lot of fast blinking helped just after (a bit like fluttering your eyelashes) and only dabbing any tears away (if any)...hope that it all goes well

i do find if it is better if you take sunglasses along with you as the light can make your eyes feel a bit uncomfortable.

I'm a devout coward on all things medical but found the drops only stung a very little for a couple of blinks - but my sight was very blurred for about 2 hours afterwards and - yes, the sunshine seemed very bright indeed so wearing sunglasses afterwards are a really good idea and don't drive yourself home from the clinic !

Good luck - as with most things I've found it's the anticipation of the hurting which makes me most nervous.

I too find it uncomfortable even with sunglasses afterwards not being able to see properly. Mine sually happens on a sunny day too!

I must be fortunate. Told drops were not needed. All seemed OK except for the 'after image' of the flash.

Karen - how did you get on today - or did the snow intervene ?

Yeah, the drops do sting a little. But it is worth the momentary discomfort. I got a bit of a shock when I opened the letter giving me the results, apparently my eyes are showing signs of early diabetic change. Whatever that is. Oh well, after thirteen years I guess that it was going to happen sooner or later...
