Had my eye tested and picture taken got results today ,the photographs showed that I have diabetic maculopathy . And says this means there was changes to the small blood vessel of the macula , which have been come leaky , this is the central part off retina , which you use to see things clearly , fluid at the centre of the macula will cause you to lose some sight and you may need gentle laser ,

So scared this letter had me in tears . I'm only 20 ,

So to anyone out there please take care off your diabetes and controll it

Oh Oliver, I'm so sorry. Have they offered you an appointment to discuss the next steps?

Just a further appointment at the hospital eye clinic is need to determine if any treatment is need or can help the vessels ,

I'm really sorry to hear this. Hope you get your appointment soon.

Hi Oliver. If you haven't lost any of your central vision yet then it may be possible that you will keep it. It is really important that you keep your BG control as tight as possible but I know that you know that. I had lasering of exudates near my macula and it didn't hurt at all. The consultant also told me that the lasering was very successful. This was nearly two years ago and I've had no new diabetic macula problems since then. It is also important that you have good blood pressure. Please chase up the eye department to get an appointment ASAP xx

Yeah I'm going ring first thing Monday , my blood pressure was taken other day was excellent , I've been idiot not after my self for years not controlling it but I'm young so I was stupid now time sort my self out , as I'm getting all these problems I know it all my fault not look sympathy . Just so hard to take in , and lot to take on bored as have some many thing to put right to sort my self out and get better and controll it , I don't even know where to start x

You've not been an "idiot" at all. You have been young and that makes it extremely difficult to take on board looking after diabetes properly. When I was 20 I thought that nothing was going to go wrong with me but unfortunately things come along and get us. You do also absolutely deserve sympathy...it's not your fault that you're diabetic and it is not fair that you have these problems. With regard to where to start a). Focus on getting your basal right - there is a thread at the top of the pumping section that explains basal testing b) learn carbohydrate counting using the online course - I don't know the link but someone else will hopefully give you that c) aim for slow improvements in your diabetic control - improvements that are too fast risk further damage to your eyes d) Phone your diabetic consultant's secretary and explain what has happened with your eyes. Ask if you can see the diabetic consultant ASAP as it is so important that you improve your control. Finally please remember that we are all here to help and support you. I do fully understand because I have lost a lot of sight in the macula on my left eye but it was because of a blood clot not because of the diabetes so I do really know how scared you are but I manage more than ok. Northener was also told that he was at risk of maculopathy but he is now ok sometimes the worrying is the most normal but worst part of eye issues.

Know how you feel had same letter today, my photos will be assessed by a consultant, such a worry. Last year I had the same letter which freaked me out and panicked me but then I got a letter saying no treatment needed at present so you might be lucky like that?.. I'm now praying praying praying that I get the same opinion this time but my bs control was bad last year as my daughter was seriously ill and I comfort ate. Good luck xxx

Oliver - you are quite young. Some maculopathy will be watched or maybe a grid laser with something like Lucentis if you are lucky.

Try to get your HBa1c down or stable slowly.. and I think that the best thing is to write down any questions.. and ask us lot.

All the best xx

Thanks you , you guys it means alot having some advice and what to do means alot , having all this frightening stuff all being told at me from doctors etc and eyes freaked me out , I know it take time to get better and control and won't just fix over night

hi Oliver,

I have mild diabetic retinopathy on the outside of my eye and got a scary letter which I took to my diabetes consultant who said it was so mild he couldn't see it on his screen without magnifying it significantly, so sometimes these letters are much scarier than when we get to speak to somebody in person! I don't know a lot about it but I just have to have mine monitored and screened every 12 months...

I don't know if these links help but I have found them useful after being pointed in the right direction on these forums, I think teamed with speaking to your diabetes team it might help your control? I've been a diabetic 18 years and still learning new things...
