got my letter today it says
"Your test results show signs of diabetic malopathy
it means there are changes to the small blood vessels on the macula"
"Please don't be alarmed. Although theres a higher risk that your vision could eventually be affected it's not too late to stop it getting worse if you manage your diabetes well"
It goes on to say it may need treatment and that they are referring me to the hospital clinic to see a specialist
of course I'm worried my bg control is the best it's ever been.
When I see the hospital what can I expect?
have others been though this and wot happened to them if they are willing to share their experiences
Thanks
Gail

Sorry to hear that changes have been detected in your macula @gail2 :(

There is some information on retinopathy, and maculopathy on this page.

Hope you can get more information at your follow-up appointment. Is there a chance it may be age-related macula changes rather than BG related?

I had this show up the last two years but I had no follow up appointments just a letter telling me it was there

Could be age related as I'm 59 help. I'm trying not to panic but part of me is imagining the worst. But for a long time I had poor bg control and I was told not to worry about it.
- Thanks for the link

Good that they want a follow-up before long - hopefully that will give you more information and let you know the next steps. :care:

Not sure that I can add very much. It is good that the issue has been picked up. The waiting for appointments and not knowing is the worst part of these matters. I used to have follow up appointments, telephone calls or letters after each screening but this seems to have gone by the board and the eye clinic only sends letters to my GP. So, I have to wait until they have been uploaded to the GP's system to see. However, when I did have the follow up appointments, it was standard for them to remind me about keeping my blood sugar under control. That seemed an automatic comment without checking what the HbA1C was.
As far as treatments are concerned. I have had laser surgery for retinopathy. That didn't stop a large bleed and I needed a vitrectomy. Some of the blood vessels are near the macula and they have been nervous about the laser surgery too near the macula. Following the vitrectomy, the cataracts became worse and I needed operations on each eye. Each of these sounds horrible when you read about them but the laser surgery is done at the ordinary eye clinic appointment. The vitrectomy involved an afternoon in hospital and each cataract operation, one on each eye, took a morning in hospital.

I have had cataract operations on both eyes a couple of years ago. One of them had to be done twice as the lens folded. Don't know if that's why I'm so nervous about this letter
Thanks everyone for your kind responses it's helped a lot
