My HBAC1 ON 21ST April was 8.4....now down to 6

MY Cholestrol spit is HDL IS LOW AT 0.9 SHOULD BE 1.3
LDL IS HIGH AT 3.1 SHOULD BE 3.0

Not got a clue what it all mean.
To me looks like my cholestrol is boarder line & my BGs are down to 6 which is what i expected so pleased with results really.
Is there any advice on what i need to be doing to get my Cholestrol level on any better.
All advice aprieciated.

Congrats On The Excellent Hba1c Result Anita !! :d:d🙂🙂

Fantastic HbA1c, stupid doctor, he needs taking down a peg or two.

As for the other thing try eating fish twice a week - that was what I was told and mine went a bit lower.

Is it ok to take cod liver oil?

Hi

No idea can't help you with that one. Someone must know.

What about nuts, do they help with cholesterol?

haha... you sound like me! i am also trying to get my cholesterol lower and yes, fish is advised! I also can't stand it but am becoming very inventive in finding ways to disguise it... Tinned mackeral in spicy tomato sauce is nice, can almost pretend it's chicken... I am forcing myself to eat fish as often as I can, ick! Generally healthy diets help though, lowering bad fats and incerasing good fats...

The other advice for lowering cholesterol is exercise.

I used to eat loads of walnuts & cashews but not had any since being diagnosed......dunno if i can or not

Hi, those figures are great - just need to 'reverse' those HDL and LDL figures and you're sorted! I recently read 'The Diabetes Revolution' and there is a good chapter in there about cholesterol and how it is produced in the body. It might be worth getting it out of the library and reading it through (see my review also in the 'Recommended Books' section).

Basically, it's more to do with insulin and carbs than the sat fat you consume. Once you've reead it you will be in a position to speak to a qualified dietician who might be able to put together a diet for you.

Good luck!🙂

Dear sweetsatin,

Nuts, in moderation, are an excellent food. I base my consumption on what they do to my blood sugar levels - not on what they do to my cholesterol. In fact I have told my doctor that I will not take statins - could it be that yours is lining you up for a statin (assuming you are not on one already!). With regards to your results, congratulations they are just great. Better predictors of heart disease are triglyerides (VLDL)and HDL. In fact these go together in as much when you lower triglyerides you HDL increases and vice versa. A great way to lower your triglycerides is a low carb diet - see the link below. The second link shows you what the relationship between cholesterol and heart disease is. The people who want to lower your cholesterol (i.e. the establishment - including the World Hearth Organisation WHO) do so because they believe that that high cholesterol means a greater chance of heart disease. The U Tube video presenter has taken his data from the WHO!

Ah yes! Triglycerides - why don't they ever mention those? They did mention mine when I was in hospital but in too much of a daze to understand or remember. What you state above Dodger, is the basic premise of 'The Diabetes Revolution'. Might not suit everyone, but I would expect an informed dietician to be familiar with it and say whether it was suitable.

Dear Northerner,

You are ofcourse correct. Just for future reference, I will always try to quote what I've found out about the science or state what it is that I do (I'm wary of offering medical/dietary advice). So, it's sort of unwritten, but I expect anyone reading my posts NOT to adopt anything I have said without first talking to (and maybe convincing!) their diabetes team.

Brilliant A1c you are well within target (6.5% or lower), and after being new to this game that is a massive achievement. Keep up the good work!
