A new study draws links between thyroid hormones and cardiac function in patients with diabetes and heart disease. Restoring normal levels of thyroid hormones prevented the progression of heart disease in rats with diabetes. The study provides the first clear indication that low thyroid hormone levels in cardiac tissue of diabetic individuals may be the major cause of their associated heart disease, say the researchers.
