Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All. Looking for some advice, although I know the decision will have to be mine. Diagnosed with Type 2 ? LADA on 7th April. On Metformin, Gliclazide & Lantus Insulin. Was taken off my anti inflammatory medication due to new meds and the increased risk of heart attack or stroke by staying on them. I have a background of spinal surgery (complicated), have fibromyalgia and am waiting for further surgery as I have a lumbar disc compressing my spinal cord. I’m in pain 24/7, and restricted in all activities of daily living. Since my anti inflammatory meds were stopped, my pain levels have increased dramatically. I am unsure if my increase in pain is due to stopping anti inflammatory meds, or a side effect of Lipitor. I’m only on 10mg daily. Perhaps it’s a combination of both, or nothing to do with either. Just wondering if any other members have experienced a similar situation. I was told in hospital that if I couldn’t cope without the anti inflammatory meds I could restart them, but to the detriment of my health. I don’t want to put my health at any further risk, but my quality of life atm is not great with 95% of my time in bed (As this is where I am in less pain. Sitting, standing, walking are all increased pain triggers). I know I need to be exercising & going outside for my physical and mental health, but the pain and fatigue are too big a barrier at the minute. Thanks for reading my rambling post…..

I rather think that you have such complex medical issues that you need to discuss your options and have a discussion about the various risk factors with your medical team, I know this is difficult at the moment and people here may be able to offer you some suggestions as to how to approach it but people are not medically qualified to give medical advice and are not allowed to do so.
I know there are a few people who have some of your issues so may be able to give you an insight on how they coped which may be of reassurance to you. It is clearly not an easy situation to be in.

My only thought is what are your blood sugar levels like?
Obviously, I would say this on a diabetes forum but there is a reason - I find high blood sugars will emphasise any aches, pains, sniffs, coughs and then the emphasised aches, pains, sniffs, coughs make my levels go higher still which will make the aches, pains, sniffs, coughs, worse which will ... and the downward spiral continues.

So my thought is, if you are able to bring your levels down, you may find the pain more bearable.

I hope you find some way to manage it because I can understand how frustrating your current situation is.
Sending yo a virtual hug because with spinal difficulties I'm not sure you would want me to give you a real hug.

@Leadinglights Thanks for your response. Yeah. I know it's pretty complex. I am hoping some other members might have had the same dilemma, and just wanted to hear how others did. I've got my first review with the hospital tomorrow, and have a list of questions. Getting to speak to a GP atm is practically impossible unless it's an emergency. I had a chat with the pharmacist about it. I hate relying on medication. Prior to my accident I never took any meds. I worked hard and played hard and lived life to the full. I really want to get as independent and pain free as possible and I know that includes exercise, which I enjoy. Need to get the energy and break through this pain, but every time I try I end up worse. As the song goes (hopefully) Things Can Only get Better

@helli Thanks for the hug. My BS's are really good. 97% of the time they are within the 4 - 7 range, and have not gone above 9 since my discharge. I know nerve pain is pretty impossible to control, but the whole other pain is just stopping me function. Hopefully I'll get a nice empathetic doctor at my appointment tomorrow who will have time to listen to and talk over my concerns. Your health is certainly your wealth

There are plenty of other pain relief meds available besides anti inflams so a talk with your Dr is in order. Hopefully you will soon feeling a lot better.

@Pumper_Sue Thanks. I am on other strong pain meds for nerve pain, it was just the anti inflammatory meds helped with osteoarthritis & fibromyalgia. Thanks for replying.

Hi Matilda-Rose,

As frustrating as it may sound, this seems like a decision that your medical team need to assist with.

Medications can impact each other in a variety of ways so it's helpful to have a full and frank with the doctor. You say that your numbers are generally good, that might give you some leverage on things.

Have you spoken with a dietitian to see if there are any supplements or health changes that can be made to help with fibro and osteoarthritis?

@Cherrelle DUK I've not seen a dietician as yet. Was meant to see one before I was discharged from hospital. I have a list of questions for my appointment tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have the opportunity to discuss it. Thanks for replying
