Individuals with type 2 diabetes are known to be much more likely to develop heart disease. In fact, the cardiovascular condition is the leading cause of death among diabetics. However, new evidence suggests that heart damage may actually preexist and contribute to the development of the metabolic condition.
It is commonly believed that high blood sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes lead to damage in the cardiovascular system that eventually causes heart disease. Tissue damage resulting from elevated glucose is generally accepted as the cause of most of the complications that result from diabetes, such as retinopathy, kidney disease and nerve damage.
