Relationship to Diabetes
HCP/Researcher
Hi, can you help? My name is Alison and I am a PhD Student at Cardiff Metropolitan University researching what (if anything) may prevent people with Type 2 Diabetes from exercising regularly and being physically active.

The aim of this research study is to test an online questionnaire which aims to identify the things that may make being physically active and exercising regularly difficult. We hope that the answers to the survey will help to shape physical activity programmes in the future.

I am looking to recruit approximately 250 people who fulfil the following criteria to complete the online questionnaire:
  • Are aged over 18 years
  • Are resident in the UK
  • Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
Taking part in the study will take about 10 minutes and will involve completing an anonymous online questionnaire. Participants will be eligible to enter a prize draw to win a £30 Love2shop voucher.

To participate in the study please follow the link below or scan the QR code using the camera on your smart phone.

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you to those of you that have completed the survey, it is very much appreciated! The survey is still open if anyone else would like to take part in the study. Many thanks and have a lovely weekend. Alison

I think that the questions make a lot of assumptions - I was unable to answer most of them.

I had a look at it and many of the questions are not appropriate if retired so it did not seem worth completing it.

Hi, thank you for having a look at the survey. The questions were devised from interviews with people with type 2 diabetes initially, and now I am in the process of seeing which barriers are relevant. It would be great to hear which ones aren't, so that if there are ones that people don't think are appropriate they can be removed or altered. There is an option for 'not relevant' for each question and so that can be selected if it doesn't apply to your situation. Your contribution would really help to filter down to what the real barriers may be. Alison

Not relevant is grouped with Disagree Strongly - not necessarily the same thing at all! It needs to be a separate response.

I started filling it out, then realized that most of her "barriers" applied to me about 15 years ago.
I have overcome them all.
I have achieved my healthy weight and am now maintaining, have pre-diabetic blood sugar, lowered my cholesterol from 7 to 5.7. I'm 63 and am now back in my local gym for the winter, doing strength training.
I wonder how much research like this ignores those of us who "strongly disagree " that being labelled with a health condition ( I am disabled from birth) means you cannot be healthy and participate in life?
I'm sure we've all had periods of feeling like that, but we overcome them.
The research then fans out into academia, without a "control group" of people who have overcome the "barriers", and next thing you know, a government imposes some spurious health criteria on the entire population because they are "following The Science "!

Hi @silentsquirrel, I totally agree that they are not the same thing. In terms of this questionnaire it means that the barrier either isn't relevant, or that the person disagrees that it is a barrier. For this study, this is ok as we are looking to rule out any that don't apply or are disagreed with. Alison

Hi Alison I tried to eMail you but it bounced, I completed the questions but there’s nothing for those of us trying to exercise with mobility aids

Hi Sarah, thank you for taking the time to answer the questions. That is a good point that you have raised about mobility aids and so I will make a note of it and include in the findings, as it is something that didn't come up in my earlier research. Many thanks, Alison

Thank you Alison, really appreciate that as desperately want to exercise safely but as I fall a lot there aren’t many specialist classes for the under 65’s, in my area the classes are strictly over 65’s only yet I live in extra care housing and there’s now a couple of us under 65 but we are excluded, I am 45 and was very active, happy to have a chat or direct message if it helps you understand things better! Best wishes Sarah
