Renewing Licence, Do the DVLA contact me ?

Hi - My 3 year licence runs out in November - Do the DVLA automatically contact me - Or are you supposed to contact them. ?
Thanks in advance - and sorry if this has been asked umpteen times before.
 
You get sent a renewal reminder 90 days before. Though Royal Mail strikes may mess with this :(
 
I wait until I get the letter from the DVLA @Big Tony It tends to arrive well in advance of the licence expiry date.
 
Hope your renewal goes smoothly @Big Tony - DVLA have had a rough time of things over the last few yeara, and some forum members have got caught up in delays and backlogs unfortunately.
 
I renewed online in late Feb I think as I knew the date was getting near (April) and I had heard that DVLA were backlogged. My renewed licence came through within about 10 days of my online application ..... and about a week later I got a letter inviting me to renew it 🙄.

They’re getting even quicker. I renewed mine at the beginning of August, which was about 6 weeks before the expiry of my old one. I hadn't had my usual 3 month reminder at that point. I got my new licence 5 working days after I'd submitted my application. I then got a letter a few days later saying they’d now completed their medical checks and would be issuing a new licence. Then a couple of days after that I got my renewal notice.
I wondered if I’d accidentally pressed a rewind button and my life was now going in reverse order. Too much to hope that it’ll continue until I’m a) younger and b) not diabetic any more.

Actually, now you mention it Robin I got the letter about their medical enquiries being completed after I got my new licence too and then the renewal. I knew there had been another letter but couldn't remember what it was about so didn't mention it. It did rather flummox me with it all being the wrong way around.
