Hi all!

A few days/weeks? (I lose track!) a thread was made about prescriptions and a review due and would they be refused. Some replied with specific details that peeps were given items like testing strips prescribed by 200's or 400's at a time!

I am only allowed 2 boxes of 50 test strips, 5 lantus pens and 5 novorapid pens.

I am seeing my doc for a review soon but wanted to gather some info in what amounts others get given? I'd like to go in and demand more of everything..I am sick to the back teeth of repeat ordering, almost everyweek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What amounts are other people prescribed for test strips and insulin pens/cartridges?

Ta muchly, Suze

I get three boxes of accu chek aviva, two boxes of accu chek compact, metformin, packet of levemir, novorapid, needles every month but I have put them in every three weeks sometimes.

I get 200 test strips each month and 10 cartridges of whichever insulin I have ordered whenever I want it.

At times my doc has been known to allow me more than the 200 a month but I have to go in and see him and explain exactly why - it's usually things like illness or a need to test more than usual when changing insulin. good luck with your review.

I get 300 strips per prescription, plus another 50 for my backup meter when I need them. I honestly don't see why you can't be prescribed a couple of months supply (which is how long mine last). I don't test a lot, average is about 6 per day, but why should you have to go back every week or two for something you are going to need for the forseeable future? I used to get 200 needles and 200 strips, plus other pills that last 56 days, so I pointed out that I use 6 strips for every 4 needles, so it would make sense if all the items were brought in line to give me around 50 days supply, which I really don't think is unreasonable.

I get a months supply at a time.
Interestingly our surgery are installing new software and everyone is getting a 2 months supply as they anticipate chaos. (They also dispense the prescriptions)

If I were cynical I would say your GP gets paid by prescription!

On my repeat script I have
200 mobile strips,
5x novorapid and levemir pens,
200 4mm needles,
sharps bin,
box of Xceed BG strips and box of Xceed Ketone strips,
box of 204 fastclix lancets and box of multiclix lancets

I just tick whatever I need each month. Although I never need all of it, so I'm guessing my GP is happy with the amounts I ask for each month. Limits on anything have never been discussed with me, I'm just assuming it will be brought up if they think I'm ordering too much.

I am lucky not to have had any problems, I manage to get as much and as often as I need it. my repeat prescription states 2 x 100 test strips as and when I need them. as is for insulin.

Hi,

I did get all my script despite review date being overdue.

I get...

8 tubs of test strips (total 400 don't hit me😉) I think because I was new to the surgery I just tried it on and the doc I was seeing has a young girl 12 (at the time) I think who tests a lot!

needles 2 boxes 5mm 31 gauge bd fine thingys so I think that's 200 needles

zero lancets

drugs, 1 box of 5 cartridges each for novorpaid and levemir.

Go demand loads, all they can say is no!

I would rather get more of the actual drug as I need more now than I did, may ask when I next see the quack, probably in 6 months.

Cheers

Hi Suze,
what you need to do is work out how much insulin you need per month or 3 months. Same with test strips etc. Point out being on insulin you require x amount of strips/day due to testing before neals for dose adjustment. bedtime, driving if you drive. So you need at least 8 strips a day plus a need to test after treating a low to make sure you are on target and not dropping.
Also point out the time wasted by you having to go collect the prescriptions and his time signing them also say how insercure you feel without any backup supplies.

I get 200 strips whihc last a month, 100 needles which last 2-3 weeks, 10 humalog catridges and 5 lantus pens plus 28 days of rampril and statins.

Some doc's will let you have a couple of months of stuff, but they should at least let you have 28 days worth if you want it. I tend to roder bits as I need them, so will usually order a script every week or two for the item or items as I need them.

I too plan to speak to a doc next time I see one but this is very rare so I just go with the flow for now. 🙄

Point out that you're not going to stop needing insulin, etc any time soon unless he can offer a cure. That will either make him feel silly or really pee him off. :D

I get no problem with my surgery. On my repeat prescription are

4 x 5 Novorapid cartridges
4 x 5 Insulartard cartridges
2 x 100 Needles
4 x 50 Test Strips
Then 2 x 28 of my other tablets

I order all this stuff as and when I want it.

John

1 box (5 cartridges) of Humalog and/or Lantus. 300 strips. Plus misc other needle clippers/needles as and when. Ordered whenever I'm running short.

I usually order the first week of the month..

1 x box of insulin
Metformin
Statin
2 x 52 test strips
Naproxen - for bad shoulder

then as required

box of needles
sharps box

Ive not really encountered any issues in getting these. In fact, they increased my strips without me asking for them

My doc is realy bugging me, she will still only let me have 50 strips per fortnight even though the consultant has written to her and requested that she give me more, every thing else i dont have a problem with getting.

Oh dear! I read that message SO WRONG! I read that you tried it on coz you were 'seeing their 12yr old daughter' ha ha ha...think I need pop down to the opticians today!!!!!

Thanks everyone for their replies!!!! Its very interesting the amounts everyone varies from but I deffo feel that my 100strips is pathetic and as a lot of you say, all it takes is for a few lows or a period of sickness and I can easily them up!

Robster - dont worry! I'm not shy, i'll be as forthright as I need to be! In fact I usually get into so much trouble from being forward!

This is exactly what is happening to me. My gp just doesnt like giving out prescriptions because of the cost. I havent even been given any ketone test strips. Im seeing a nurse at the practice in a couple of weeks so Im going to have a word then. Thankfully Ive just attended the DAFNE so they may actually listen but until they do Im stuck with going back in to repeat every 2 weeks.
Hopefully you can get everything sorted, well more like your gp can 🙂 Good luck with everything.

It would be intersting to know the cost to the NHS, th GP and the chemist of raising and servicing a prescription. Not to mention the cost to the patient of having to collect it each time.

I bet they could save thousands if only someone could persuade them that diabetes lasts for more than 2 weeks and that all those lovely expensive supplies are actually needed rather than given away to friends and relatives. 😡

I hope they see sense. 🙂

I can get metformin and statins about once a month. I haven't had to ask for more needles but the test strips have been taken off my prescription so I can't get those at all. My nurse gives me a pot of 50 when I see her... But there is a gap of 6 months before I see her this time and she only gave me one pot of 50 and said test about twice a week night and morning. Doesn't take much knowledge of maths to realise this won't work, so a lot of my diet etc is guess work ( only diagnosed 8 months ago ).. Rant over !!

You really need to push this as it is totally wrong to limit your strips when you are on rapid-acting insulin, especially given that your consultant has written and been ignored - unacceptable! How many times a day are you able to test?

hi guys just seen this as per my other thread i am now getting 50 strips at a time ggrrrr its works out if i have no hypos/hypers ,illness, meter errors or any other problems and only check before taking my insulin 4 times daily there will last 12.5 days got appoinment with gp on monday and am going to clinic in july to rant about it i can get my insulin, needles and lancets whenever i get a box at a time
