Referral to Diabetic Clinic / dietician

I am just wondering if its usual (initially) when BG is high to be referred to a Diabetic Clinic and dietician at the hospital or perhaps in some cases at the GP surgery.

I see my doc on Saturday and just want to be a little prepared. Wonder if I need to ask to be referred.

What is the usual procedure?

I wonder if my BG levels are drug induced at time of pneumonia / oral steroids and Antibiotics if the doc may want to wait a couple more months before referring me.

But then with the palpitations and pending lung xray again next week. I wonder if I should be asking for referral now to a Chest Clinic.

It is unusal for Type 2 to be reffered to the hospital for Diabetes care.

Neither, I would have thought. Steroids do temporarily bump up your BG levels, but they should sort themselves out. As far as the chest goes, it really depends on whether you have any persisting chest problems, but even then that remains within the competence of a GP without necessarily referring to a respiratory specialist. I assume you don't smoke.

I see the diabetic nurse at the surgery end of the month and bloods re done in 8 weeks. Third chest xray done today so will wait to get those results. Lung foundation say, NICE guidelines are referral to chest specialist if lung xrays are not clear after 8 weeks. I'm at 12 weeks now.

I was diagnosed last November with steroid induced diabetes. I've been taking steroids for the past 11 years for lung conditions. My Respiratory Consultant asked my GP to refer me to Endocrinology to monitor my Type II diabetes. I have monthly chest infections requiring steroids and antibiotics. When I'm on steroids I have to take Gliclazide along with Metformin and increase to two Gliclazide tablets if blood sugars continue to rise (I test more when on steroids). My next Endocrinology appt is in May when they will decide if I need to inject Insulin when taking steroids. The Hospital Dr said I'm not your usual Diabetic so I need to be seen by a Consultant. Hope this helps.

Hi Mousetrap many thanks for your reply its very helpful, its something I am going to have to be more aware of when I take steroids. Poor you having chest infections and steroid / antibiotic treatment monthly. I hope you get on ok at the Endocrinology appointment. I my first diabetic appointment on 24th of this month but that is just with a diabetic nurse and only to discuss diet at this stage. My fasting bloods are being rechecked in 8 weeks to see how the blood glucose is doing then. I've not had steroids since February, but I am hoping BG level is temporary I will have to wait and see.
