Hi all 🙂
Three weeks ago I changed my diet. I decided to go vegan for ethical reasons and also to lose weight.
It's been going well, and I've lost 3kg so far. My diet has been completely overhauled, and I no longer snack if I can avoid it.
I expected my insulin requirements to change, but I wasn't exactly sure what would happen.
My lantus has been at 17iu for several months now, and my humalog is 1iu:10g carb with a correction of 1iu:3mmol. Pretty big standard! My BGs have been very stable recently, but I noticed my fasting BG was starting to get lower and I was having to have some jelly babies before bed to ensure no night hypos. I reduced it to 15iu and last night to 14iu
Last night I was 12 mmol before bed (highest in a while!) so I took 1iu of insulin which should have bought me down to 9mmol. 2 hours later at 2am I was at 6.2mmol so I ate some jellies and went back to sleep. On waking at 8am I was 3.8. Corrected with glucose and had breakfast with 50% of the insulin I would usually give.
Had another hypo an hour later. It's been a struggle to keep my BGs up all day and have had several hypos.
I phoned my DSN today and she has advised me to change my ratios to 1iu:15g carbs and a correction of 1iu:4mmol, to keep my lantus at 14iu for 2 more days to allow it to catch up, and if still waking low on Friday to reduce it again to 12iu. She explained that losing weight may have made me more sensitive to insulin, and may need less insulin because there's less of me essentially.
Has anyone else experienced something like this when losing weight?
I'm so exhausted from all the hypoing, and quite frankly a little scared of all the hypoing, but I think I might be over emotional because of all the ups and downs today!
Thanks guys and I apologise for the long rambling post!
