Hi Guys

New to the forum - recently diagnosed with Type 2 and things were going great, lost three stone last year and felt good. But now I've developed neuropathy in my feet and it has totally knocked me. Feel like it's totally stalled my progress and is really impacting my life.

Was hoping there were others who have been through the Neuropathy ordeal and can offer a light at the end of the tunnel. Been on Amitriptyline for three weeks and I think it'll will work, but still crazy uncomfortable and painful at some times. Wearing shoes is a total pain. Just feeling a bit hopeless with it and hoping for a bit of guidance and reassurance.

Good to be here, seems a really helpful place.

Thanks

Hi @Seanron - what's your day to day blood glucose doing, cos people I've known who have recently found they have neuropathy pain in their feet, have sorted it by reducing their blood glucose for much more of the time than previously and the only warning you need about doing that very thing is that nerves can hurt just as much when they are healing again as they did when they were getting damaged.

Have you got a blood glucose meter and do you test yourself regularly?

My GP's said I don't need to test everyday anymore, and my glucose reader usually puts me between 6 - 7 mmol in the morning. I've made a heap of changes to keep it low too - was up in the 15's before I made changes

Hi Seanron,
I had the same problem 4ish years ago ...the neuropathy kicked in real fast even though I worked hard for 6 months to get my BS to normal.
I know how you feel ...make all the changes, deny foods that you use to eat then the panic of losing toes.
My doctor put me on amitriptyline and pregabalin ...only get the tingles now and again.
I know many people don't agree with taking the pregabalin but it works for me...maybe a chat with GP about it?
Hope you get it sorted.
Hugs

Hi also have neuropathy and was in sane drug and got relief but when stopped things worsened quickly. Might be the dose isn’t quite enough for you so definitely talk to Gp, it can take a while to kick in but three weeks in now so maybe speak to the dr in a week or so x

Hello, I have the same condition and find sitting with my feet up helps as well as sleeping with my feet slightly raised. My footwear is cushioned and if my feet and legs are burning up, I stick them in a bowl of cold water until they go numb.
Pins and needles won't do any harm, they're just a total pain to live with. I can't cope with Amitriptyline at all, I find it makes me too sleepy.
I would find something enjoyable to do like swimming to take your mind off it. It's definitely mind over matter.

I was going to post, that I've noticed over the past few days that my feet are a lot better.. I've thrown away any socks with elasticated cuffs after my feet were so bad the other evening that I couldn't relieve them, I took my socks off and realised the cuff was cutting into my legs.. Also working hard at dropping my daily blood sugars.
I just bumped into a lady from the village who is a reflexologist.. She advised making sure lower back and hips aren't tight, via stretching, as it will help to keep the nerve pathways to the feet clear.

I thought I was the only one suffering with the socks issue- thanks for sharing

I’m prescribed 4x10mg Amitriptyline for NP but lately it’s taken more than that stop the shooting pains and electric pins and needles that now are in my calf.
The Amitriptyline makes me sleepy- is pregablin any better ?
