Hello
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three months ago. I am very overweight
despite having been dieting for the last 20 years or so! I was already eating a healthy diet and have not had to change much.
I suspect that being pre-diabetic for many years has made weight loss more difficult for me than for many others- has anyone else found this? At Weight Watchers I would lose a few pounds in the same time that others lost two stones.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who has experienced this.
 
Hi and welcome to the site julie , im not a major dieter but since being diagnosed i aint half took more notice of my weight
 
Hi Juliefoo, welcome to the forum🙂 I've read that the whole obesity issue can be the wrong way around - you have a genetic predisposition for diabetes, which means increased insulin resistance - your pancreas produces more insulin to compensate - insulin is a growth hormone - you put on weight. By the time you have symptoms bad enough to get you to seek a diagnosis, you are overweight and having difficulty losing it.

I hope that, now you are diagnosed, you can find a regime that will help you to regain control of your blood sugar levels and help you lose the weight. There are many here with experiences such as yours, and I am sure they will offer good support and advice. Welcome!🙂

Dieting is a strong predictor of weight gain.
The diet recommended by the NHS and Diabetes Uk for diabetics is ..
A low GI ( Glycemic Index), Mediterranean style diet with about 1800 calories a day for a woman.
45% to 60% of calories from carbs depending on level physical activity/work done
Upto 35% of calories from fats including 25% from "good" (unsaturated fats - Omega 3 and fish oils, olive oil etc)
10-20% from protein.

The idea for diabetics is not so much to specifically diet ( although losing weight is very important for T2s) but making lifestyle changes for good that might take something like a pound a week off until you are at target weight.
We are in a Marathon ( hopefully) not a sprint.

Hi Julie, welcome to the forum 🙂. I started Weightwatchers at the end of May and was diagnosed T2 and put on Metformin at the beginning of September. From May till diagnosis I lost 20lbs (14 weeks) and from September to now I have lost 25.5lbs (15 weeks) so have went from an average of 1.4lbs per week to 1.7lbs per week loss. I cant definatley say it is because I have got my glucose levels under control but I think it is! :D. Good luck x
 
I am Type 2 diagnosed in October this year and will get my first results on my HbA1c on 5 Jan. I have tried most of my life to lose weight (was overweight as a child and obese in later years, I am 47 now). I tried all diets going to lose weight but it was never consistent. Since becoming Type 2 i have lost nearly 2 stones, i still have a long way to go (i need to lose about another 4 stones to get to goal weight so i hope by next summer i will achieve this. Once you have conquered the weight then it gives me one less thing to worry about and then hopefully the other things like blood pressure, cholesterol etc will fall into place, at least once you minimise all the risks relating to diabetes it goes a long way to staying healthy and controlling diabetes.
