Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hey,

I was diagnosed yesterday with type 2 diabetes. I live in Hong Kong but I am from the UK. I am wondering if there is anyone here who lives or has lived in Hong Kong who has any advice on support in Hong Kong.

I am a little upset at the moment and feel like I need to speak to someone that knows more about Diabetes and what I should be doing.

Welcome jhardisty.

I'm not aware of any members of this forum who live in Hong Kong, but hope to be proved wrong.

However, much of managing type 2 diabetes - diet, exercise, weight control, medication - are international. So, lots of people here will be able to offer you advice, sources of information etc. Diabetes The First Year by Gretchen Becker is recommended by many - available from Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Type-Diabet...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1337158833&sr=1-1

Jennifer's Advice (updated version) at http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045524.php and Maggie Davey's Letter at http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045524.php are quick to access online.

Welcome to the forum.

I think Copepod pretty much covered it from my perspective too. However, let us know if you have any specific question (or questions) in mind and I'm sure someone will pop up with an idea or suggestion which may help.

Andy 🙂

Thanks for the responses. I think the biggest problem for me at the moment is asking people what is going to happen etc.

Something I wanted to ask was how quickly did this hit people. I seemed to be doing fine no concerns up until about 3 weeks ago. I returned from Thailand where I had been on a rugby trip and started feeling more dehydrated. Then about a week ago I started getting a really dry mouth and excessive urination. That was what made me go check with the doctor. Does this sound about normal?

Anyway thanks for your support and I am sure I will have more questions.

Hi jhardisty, welcome aboard. Sorry you have to join us, but no better place for support.

I had my symptoms masked by another illness and found out I had type 2 by tests for something else, so I know the shock of it all.

Prior to diagnosis I was downing two or three bottles of fizzy pop a day.

I didn't realise it at the time but this was for two reasons. The first was due to thirst and the second was because I was suffering from insulin resistance which meant my body was crying out for energy. I couldn't use the glucose which was building up in my blood stream because the insulin I was still producing wasn't able to do its job due to my excess weight.

Once I'd lost the weight, within just two or three months I had improved so much I was able to stop taking the medication and revert to diet and exercise only.

Andy 🙂

AndyHB that is good to know as I want to get to that stage as well if I can, I am overweight at the moment and have been for a long while. So weight lose I am hoping will help.

I am cutting out my carbs and taking metformin 500mg three times a day and Gliclazide 80mg once a day. I feel a little bit nauseous at some points but I am hoping that will go away.

Anyway thanks for your support.
