Hello All

As stated in the title, I have had type2 diabetes recently diagnosed and am only just starting to learn about the effect it will have on my life, or what's left of it at the age of 54 🙂 . Any symptoms I might have had were masked by a lifestyle dictated by working nights so I haven't a clue how long I've actually had it. I must admit to being a little confused as to how concerned I should be.

Hi Eddie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Don't worry, you've got lots more living to do, as long as you take some time to learn how to manage your diabetes well. Many people find that they end up much healthier because they learn to eat healthily and are more motivated to stay or become active in order to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

Try not to be overwhelmed by it all, or look too far ahead at this stage. There is a lot to learn, but you don;t need to know it all from day 1 - grasp the fundamentals first (so to speak!) and then take it from there. You'll find a lot of useful information in our Useful links thread. Particularly recommended are Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker is a highly recommended book to help you through the first few weeks and months.

How were you diagnosed, and are you on any medication? Please ask any questions you may have - there is a wealth of experience here, so someone can usually provide and answer or share their own experiences 🙂

Ta. 🙂 I had a blood test at my hypertensive review and that showed high glucose levels and a urine test a week later.

Were you given any advice after the diagnosis or have you been left with a couple of leaflets and expected to get on with it?

Welcome to the forums eddieh 🙂

Wellcome..

I had an appointment with the practice nurse last Monday. She told me about Diabetes UK, checked my feet, checked blood pressure, took more blood to test for possible thyroid problem, gave me a fair selection of leaflets and briefly told me what they were about asked me a few questions about my medical history and asked me to keep a record of my bp for the two weeks until my next appointment (a week tomorrow). I suppose we'll go into how it is to be managed then. Oh yes, another urine sample sent away last Friday.
The original blood and urine tests were both taken just after a 10 hour shift when I'd been snacking every two hours. Does this affect the accuracy of the tests?

I would imagine they would have asked you if it would have had an impact - it would depend on what tests they are doing. A test that is done for diabetes is called the HbA1c which gives a sort of average of your blood sugar levels over the past 6-12 weeks and this will be unaffected by what you ate the day/night before.

Hi Eddie and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Eddie, welcome to the forum. Its all a bit daunting I found when first diagnosed, but bit by bit it comes together and we can begin to control it.

Just take your time and get as much help and information as you can, and ask away on here, their not a bad bunch:D

Hiya

So have they done a finger prick blood test at all? and if so, what was it?

Welcome to the forum Eddie.

My brother is also type 2 and works shifts. I think his main problem is finding the time to eat three regular meals a day. To some extent this is quite important because it is helpful to spread any carbohydrate intake through the day rather than cramming it all into one meal (like what I used to before diagnosis)!

Andy 🙂
