Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone I’ve recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was shocked and scared and so much information to process I have become very anxious and it’s controlling my life rather than me controlling it have any of you suffered similar experiences

I have to say yes. You will find many different ways to help. The group here is very diverse and as the disclaimer says each to their own way. So take what is useful at the time. Diabetes is with you now for life so its your health that you are addressing. The learning zone has good advice . I started there. We are all human and all make good bad choices at times. Try to just relax and know you are with people who have it so can empathise and ask questions . All the best

Hi and welcome. It can feel overwhelming at first but it is surprising how quickly you can learn to cope. I suggest you take it one step at a time, absorbing as you go along. I found the learning zone invaluable and did one module a day, starting with food, then exercise. I also started a daily food diary, being totally honest. There are several ways to do this, from pen and paper, spreadsheet or, as I did, with an online app. (It cuts out all the hard work).
If you let us know your HbA1c on diagnosis, medications and any other medical conditions, we could tailor our replies to you.

Thanks for replying My hba1c was 91 the nurse told me that was extremely high and I could have had this for many years I’m on metformin 1 in the morning and check bloods in morning and teatime if blood level less than 8 not to take the gliclazide I’ve cut out everything sugary and have started exercising I’m 46 and I’m 12 stone so looking to lose about 2 stone

Why did they suddenly decide to do a blood test?

Hi because I wasn’t feeling well dry mouth, thirst, going to the toilet frequently thrush I actually went to the dr as thought it was perimenopause so for bloods done and sent for an ultrasound that showed I have a fatty liver and my sugar level was 22

That is good that you have cut out everything sugary but it is also necessary to consider your intake of all carbohydrates as they also convert to glucose. Foods like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals and tropical fruits are all big hitters.
Have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet if you are interested in a low carb approach. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/product/freshwell-low-carb-manual/. Low carb is suggested as being no more than 130g carbs per day it is not NO carbs.
I have not heard of DSNs telling people to take or not take the gliclazide depending on their blood glucose reading, but I suppose their may be some logic.

91 is high but many of us on here have started off even higher (114 in my case) but through a combination of adopting a low carb diet, exercising more and losing some weight have managed to bring it right down and in many cases come off medication. It's tough at first but we're all here to help and it gets easier, so although you may feel shocked, scared and anxious at the start after a while it becomes a way of life.

Thank you I really like being able to speak to folks in the same position I’m baffled as to how I have this we eat healthy no processed foods plenty veg and fish I’m thinking it may be hereditary and I’ve ran 9 marathons so I was for until my daughter was diagnosed with cancer 7 years ago so thinking could it be stress related

Many people are puzzled as they feel they have a healthy diet but it is some of the foods which are considered healthy for non diabetics that are the root cause of the problem when your body has problems with processing carbohydrates regardless of colour so it is the brown versions of things like bread, rice, pasta and whole wheat cereals that have just as many carbs as the white version. They may release the glucosemore slowly and taste better but they are still carbs.

Ah! Classic symptoms of course complete with those world famous twins, Polydipsia and Polyuria 🙂
(No idea how I put them in a 'quote' box)

So, have those 2 at least, been reduced since your diagnosis? (ie the raging thirst and the attendant needing to pee more) Plus - had you noticed any weight loss prior to diagnosis?

Yes I can give online app names, and it is up to you which you choose, if any. I use NutraCheck which is UK based, has a free trial and a small monthly fee. Others use MyFitnessPal which is USA based and free. There is also MySugr and one I don't know the exact name, but is something like Cals and Carbs. A Google search may give you more.

Yes the thirst and needing to go to the loo more frequently has eased a good bit
