Type 1
Hey everyone, my name is Nicola I am 25 and I was diagnosed with type 1 in April. So all pretty new to me. Things had settled and my blood sugars were fine. In the last month my blood sugars have been running high again and I'm really struggling to get them down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi Nicola Welcome.
Others will be along shortly who are more experienced than me.
If you don't mind me asking, What insulins are you on.
I know it can take time to get the doses right , have you seen or been in contact with the diabetic clinic recently

Hi Nicola, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis - how did it come about? What insulin regime are you on? When you say your levels are running high again, how is it comparing to what you had got them down to?

Sorry for all the questions! It's still relatively early days for you, so some fluctuations are more than likely. Often, shortly after diagnosis, a person's pancreas can recover some of its function and levels can stabilise for a while (or sometimes this mucks things up! 🙄) Without knowing much about your situation it's hard to know what to suggest. Haveyou been on, or are you booked on a course to learn about your diabetes?

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas if you don't already have it - it is a great source of information and very useful as a reference, covering all aspects of Type 1 - often things you may not even have considered!

Let us know a little more about yourself and we will do our best to help with any questions or concerns you may have 🙂

Sounds to me Nicola, that whatever 'honeymoon period' you have had has now finished, so yes your doses will need adjustment again - almost as if it's Day 1 again.

Absolutely ring your clinic and ask to speak to a DSN - if possible, go and see her and have a face to face.

Probably if you could do some basal testing it might help, but anyway keep a full food insulin and activity diary to help inform the discussions.

Hi Nicola and welcome to the forum. I cant advise on the insulin side of things but I just wanted to say hi.

Hey thanks for all of the advise. A little more about me, I had gestational diabetes. My daughter turned 1 in May. After she was born my blood sugars were fine. I then started to have symptoms such as thirst and urinating more.
I was in hospital for 4 days with keroneacidosis. After that I was put on novorapid and lantus.
I managed to get my blood sugars sitting between 5 and 8. Now I am sitting between 11 and 18. So unsurprisingly I'm not feeling too well.
I spoke to my DSN today and she has put me on metforman.
I'm hoping that helps

What sort of insulin doses are you on Nicola? Did the DSN suggest increasing the doses at all? If not, I am surprised.

Metformin is usually given if a person is insulin-resistant and this would be indicated by high doses of insulin. Did the DSN explain how metformin works? It can take a week or two before you start to see any benefit from it, as it needs to 'establish' itself over time, so don't expect instant results. It can also cause gastric upsets as a side effect - if these get too bad then you should ask for the slow-release version.

Hi Nicola and welcome
I'm also surprised that the DSN prescribed metformin . Have you been a Dafne course or do you have access to someone (DSN or dietician) who can help you with carb counting so you can adjust your insulin doses ?
I'm a type 1 on insulin and also metformin but that's because I'm 32 weeks pregnant so it was prescribed to help with my insulin resistance so I can avoid injecting bucket loads of insulin. As soon as baby is born I'll stop the metformin
Wishing you the best of luck !

Yeah she was concerned that I had some insulin resistance. i was told to increase my insulin. I have been carb counting almost as soon as I was diagnosed. 1 unit to 10 grams of carbs was working well. For the moment I have to try 2 units to 10 grams.
Thank you, hopefully things level out and I start to feel better
