Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I was recently (2 weeks or so) diagnosed with diabetes as a result of a blood sugar reading of 62, so trying to work out the next steps. Age just short of 60 but weight was 87.5 kg and exercise was minimal, so have started to add in some exercise each day, even if it’s currently only 2k/10mins on the rowing machine (and 15m+ recovery!)
Meds are Metformin, which I’m currently trying to build up to, due to effects on the stomach which aren’t too bad but will hopefully ease off more with time?
Was already eating vaguely healthily plus sweeteners and diet drinks but currently doubling down on the food and cutting out sweeteners too, just in case that helps, either directly or with getting used to a lower overall level of sweetness in the diet.

Hi @Gwyn and welcome to the forum.

I'm guessing that you might need to lose a pound or two unless you are tall! If thats the case, then by losing it, upping the exercise, cutting the carbs and taking the meds means that you are pulling all the right levers in the right direction. If you read around the forum you will find members have adopted different strategies depending on what suited them but I am one of those who has had success with the" bit of everything" approach. When it came to eating I focussed on carbohydrate in general and not just sweet things because when you look at what is going on, it made sense. All round less stressful in my book.

Anyway, just ask any questions and somebody will be along to share experiences.

You seem to have made a good start with some changes but unless you are particularly sensitive to sweeteners they usually do no harm to blood glucose levels but adjusting your taste to less sweet is a good idea. It is all carbohydrates that you need to be mindful of not just the 'sweet' stuff. Things that might be regarded as healthy, potatoes, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals and some fruits for non diabetics are not so if Type 2 diabetic.
This link may help you with some ideas for modifying your diet, it is a low carbohydrate approach based on real food. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Welcome to the forum @Gwyn

Sounds like you have made a good start.

Stick with the new menu, tastes do change, but it might take a little while 🙂
