Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I am a 51 year old female and was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in January. I collapsed in town and when they got me to hospital they told me I had diabetes, aneamia and viral melingitis.
I am just getting my head around all the tablets but my blood sugars range from 3.11 - 12.00 at the moment (although this is an improvement as they were 26.6 when I was diagnosed).
I'm really embarrassed about a couple of things and not sure if I should mention them to my doctor? The first is that I have noticed a really bad odour coming from just my right armpit and the night before last I wet the bed. Are these symptoms of diabetes? Has anyone else suffered from this? Should I tell my doctor? thanks

Hi annieh, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the other problems you are having to contend with - hopefully the treatment you are now getting will help you get things back under control.

Regarding the problems you mention - yes, needing the toilet in the night is common in diabetes if your blood sugar levels are high, your kidneys are trying to flush out the excess sugar in your body via urine. As your levels improve, hopefully this should become less of a problem. Regarding the armpit odour, I wonder if you have an infection there? There are, as you might imagine, sweat glands aplenty in your armpits, and it may be that you have an infection there which is causing the odour - I would recommend getting your doctor to have a look at it. Again, susceptibility to infection is greater when your blood sugar levels are on the high side, so this situation should improve as your levels improve.

There's lots of good information available to help you learn about your condition. A good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and I would also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will all get you up to speed and give you the knowledge you need to tackle your diabetes and bring your levels under control. Things may seem bad at the moment, but equipped with the right knowledge and some determination, you will find that you will begin to feel much, much better than you may have done for some time! If you have any questions then please do ask - nothing is considered 'silly', and there are lots of lovely, friendly and experienced people here who will be only too happy to help 🙂

Yes, what Northie said- BUT frankly I'd also go and tell your doctor. You may well be embarassed about it but I can assure you - he or she won't be. They have FAR more embarrassing things told to them every single day, honest. It does sound to me as if it could stem from having far too high blood glucose for far too long (many T2s aren't detected for ages cos they feel OK, that's why they are always saying there are eg half a million people who have it but don't know)

But I'd rather a doctor tell me exactly the same thing just to make sure it isn't anything else and also to see if they could give your diabetes a bit more help until you can get your numbers down. We don't heal very well with too high BGs, so sometimes treatment for other stuff doesn't work and we just get recurrent problems - like eg thrush, keeps coming back again.

You probably can't imagine anything more embarrassing but I'm sure they could give you a graphic account - esp if they've worked in A&E LOL

Thanks!

Thank you both for your informative answers - it really is a minefield to get your head around all the information that is out there.
Looking back, I think I've had diabetes for probably over a year without realising it and am so relieved it was discovered!
I will read the books you have recommended and visit the doctor too. I have my first diabetic "meeting" with other recently diagnosed people in a couple of weeks so hopefully I will find some answers thee too. Thanks again x 🙂

Ah, that's good that you've got the meeting lined up annie - it will make you feel much less isolated with your diabetes, and it's much easier to talk about it with people in the same boat 🙂

Welcome to the forums annieh 🙂
