Hi.
I discovered last week that my type 2 diagnosis has been confirmed. I have been living with pre-diabetes for around 7 years and believed I had everything under control. I have altered my diet considerably, excercise regularly, have become essentially a non drinker and generally in excellent health. Therefore it was something of a shock to discover I now have type 2. Has anyone else had a similar experience.

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few people who are /have been in your situation in they have hovered in the pre diabetes zone but jump over the threshold but hopefully in your case not too far. Many people think they are eating a 'healthy' diet but it may not be so if you have a problem with carbohydrates, even the brown/wholemeal versions make little difference as they are about the same amount of carbs as the white, it is just for some people they are converted to glucose more slowly.
I was in that situation 3 years ago but adopted a low carb regime based on the principals in this link and reduced my HbA1C from 50mmol/mol to 42 in 3 months and to 38 in another 6months, it is now my new way of eating and 3 years on I hover just below 40mmol/mol. Even though I do not have low fat and do take a low dose 10mg statin my cholesterol is 3.2 and triglycerides really low.
I was determined to do it by dietary changes rather than medication and my GP was on board with that.

Would you like to say a bit more about you diagnosis and what your HbA1C is as that will indicate how much you need to do.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, the NHS app does not provide the HbA1C level, it simply confirms that I have type 2 and I cannot get an appointment with the nurse for another three weeks to discuss the diagnosis, this is slightly disappointing, however I understand the pressures most GP practices are under currently.

I had not considered the relationship between brown/wholemeal and white carbs, although I gave up eating bread about 2 months ago and have very little rice or pasta, or indeed potatoes in my diet.

I am hopeful as you mentioned, that I have just crept into the low threshold and can reverse this reasonably quickly with some expert guidance and lots of will power.

Hello, I'm new too. No advice to give as I'm only just starting to find my way. Bilut wanted to say hi. 🙂

I think this is the link @Leadinglights meant to include 🙂

Have you been told the result of your HbA1c that confirmed your diagnosis @KevinCC

That can give you an idea of how far over the diagnostic threshold you find yourself.

It sounds as though you have adopted a fairly low carbohydrate diet, which probably helped hold your diabetes at bay for some time. Some people’s metabolisms just start to struggle after a while, and some additional help and support from meds can help to balance their glucose levels.

Woops!!!

If you result is not on the app then you should be able to ring your surgery and ask, you need the actual number which would be a number over 47mmol/mol to give you the diagnosis not just a bit high, high etc.
It is important to know so you do not over react.

Welcome, looks like to date you have done really well and maybe you only need a few tweaks to the diet to stay on course. Yes you need to know your number and have every right to demand it, it does annoy me when I hear some people are being treated this way, as though the figures are the gp's personal property and the patient should be kept in the dark because "we are the professionals and our opinion is the only one that counts" etc. After all its your body and your data. My surgery lets me access all my detailed records and results on line, request this next time you see them, just involves a few forms and a bit of patronising rubbish from the admin team.

Hi.

Thank you for your reply, I am sorry to hear you too have been recently diagnosed, hopefully we will both improve with hard work and a little discipline, easier said than done though.

Good luck on your journey.
