Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi,

I was diagnosed with pre diabetes in December, HbA1c of 43. I'm only 5ft 2 and weigh 7st 11lbs so have a BMI of 20.
I keep having my appointments with the Nurse at the Surgery cancelled so haven't got to sit and discuss diet etc., with anybody as yet.
Having done some work in the field of Diabetes as a Nurse I have reduced my carb intake down to around 75g per day but as a result am losing weight which I don't want to do. I was 8st 1 so have lost 4lb in four weeks and really don't wish to go any lower. I was eating too many carbs prior to diagnosis, probably around 240g a day.
I'm pretty fit and active otherwise and walk 3 miles a day.
I've swapped to wholemeal bread, brown rice etc., and have upped my intake of good fats, protein and fish.
Any idea how many carbs a day I should be aiming for? I have a family history of T2 but Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Uncles and cousins, not 1st degree relatives and my Mother had pancreatic cancer in her 50's.

Any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

Everyone has a different threshold, and completely different reactions to foods.
You really need a meter to check the effects of various foods on your body, and take it from there.

Hi Vixsie, welcome to the forum.

It’s great to hear that you’re taking action so early as it seems like you’re on the right track.

It’s natural to loose a few pounds when you change your diet in such a way so hopefully things level out but do keep an eye on it.

As above, there isn’t a standard amount of carbs everyone should aim for. You’d need to buy a blood sugar monitor and test in the morning and two hours after meals to see the impact your meals are having on you and take it from there.

With an Hba1C of 43 mmol/mol you are really only at the bottom end of the prediabetes zone so you may well have reduced your carb intake too much as you don't need to lose weight. Even for people in the diabetes the suggested amount of total carbs per day is no more than 130g so you have gone much lower. I appreciate you want to get into the normal range but you could make more modest changes and still achieve that. Protein and healthy fats should help with maintaining your weight.
