Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Good morning I was diagnosed type 2 diabetes towards the end of last year. I was also diagnosed with high blood pressure too. Blood pressure coming down now with meds but my diabetes I’m trying to control at minute with diet. December my blood glucose was 52mmol , yesterday I had my three month review and received results a few hours later my blood glucose is now 49mmol, they also tested my cholesterol again and that’s gone up , I have been called back to the surgery tomorrow to discuss more with diabetes nurse.
im overweight but trying to work on that and nurse yesterday said my weight loss was good so far and to carry on with what I’m doing, have to admit I’m anxious about tomorrow.

Welcome
You are heading in the right direction with your HbA1C so have been doing some right, it may be the cholesterol that they are concerned about and might suggest statins, but many people do find that by reducing carbohydrates their cholesterol reduces anyway.
There is no reason why you should need to go on to any diabetes medication but maybe just need to tighten up your dietary regime to encourage that HbA1C on the downward track.
A low carb approach should be good for losing weight and bringing down blood glucose.

Thankyou for replying, I’ve been overthinking things today I think, I will talk it all through with diabetes nurse tomorrow and hopefully it will be better than what I’m thinking, thanks again

Although it is minimized by some, I was put straight onto Metformin and Atorvastatin at diagnosis in late 2016 and almost did not make it to Christmas due to the side effects.
I have no idea if it did anything other than make me consider suicide several times, and it took at least 18 months to get rid of the worst of the side effects, but even after 5 years there are still gaps in my memory - I played Mark Antony when I was at school and a couple of weeks ago found I could not even get past the opening lines of the famous FRC speech.

Oh dear that doesn’t sound good

Well done on a terrific start @megzmam

Gradually improving your HbA1c is gentler on the nerves and fine blood vessels in the eyes than making sudden changes.

Weight loss will help your metabolism cope and should improve insulin sensitivity too.

Hope your appointment went well today, and you got some good advice and support.

As someone living with diabetes you are statistically at greater risk of heart disease, and there is a lot of clinical trial evidence to show that statins can reduce your relative risk. Many people on the forum take statins with no problems, so perhaps the best bet is to chat through any worries you may have with your Dr, and see how you get on with them?

Thanks for your reply , my appointment went well I think…..I didn’t hold back about how I was feeling emotionally and it was a new nurse and I’ve got to say she was fantastic , listened, advised and was very informative …..she gave me a few options , her and the doctor pleased with my blood glucose levels coming down and said I could start on metformin if I wanted too or carry on chipping away at weight loss and diet myself but also looking at my family history that could be a factor of my diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol, my mental health I struggle with too and I feel better taking meds ….I hope that makes sense….500mg daily at teatime.
my cholesterol levels scared me they were all higher than in December and I can’t remember the name if the test they do but it works out your % chance of possible stroke or heart attack in next 10 year and mine was 24%, anything above 10% they advise a statin, needless to say I’m starting those as soon as I pick em up from chemist today…..my father died in his early 50s from a series of strokes, my mum had a heart attack at 53 and also has diabetes.

so I’m going this way forward and will see how it goes , another review in 3 months but I am to monitor how I get on how I get on in meantime and get in touch if medication isn’t suiting me.

on a plus nurse said my blood pressure was perfect yesterday lol
