Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone i was diagnosed with type 2 about 3 years ago now. I feel that i haven't had much support and that i really don't know what to do . I have already had 4 operations in the 3 years due to nerve damage in my arms. I really don't know how to cope with this. I am on metformin at the moment .

Welcome Bluejay. Northerner and others will be along soon with advice links.

The operations on your arms - were they following an injury? Surgery is unusual to treat diabetes related nerve damage, which is more common in legs than arms.

Welcome to the forum Bluejay 🙂

Northerner will most likely recommend the Gretchen Becker book, which is very very good 🙂

Feel free to ask lots of questions! What sort of things do you need support and advice with - there are always lots of helpful people on here!

Hi copepod thanks for getting back to me. The operations i had was "ulner nerve transposition" in both arms due damage caused by diabetes, its when they move the ulner nerve to a different position.

Thanks for explaining. Has the surgery helped you?

Yes thanks it as sorted the problems that i had in my arms and wrists, but now i have lots of bad pains in my legs and feet. Sometimes it's a struggle to walk. I don't really think i am eating a proper diet for diabetes either i really crave sweet things, is this normal ?

Hi bluejay, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear that you have had problems, and also that you have received a poor level of care. Hopefully, we will be able to help you to ask the right questions in the right places so that your health care team start doing a better job for you 🙂

There is a lot of good reading in our Useful links thread, including a link to a page telling you what care you should expect from the NHS, some good links on how to manage your diabetes well, and an excellent book, Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker which is highly recommended - just because this is not your first year, you shouldn't think it is not for you!

One of the best diets to follow is the GL (Glycaemic Load) diet, which combines foods for flexibility and that will release their energy slowly and steadily to help you maintain good blood sugar levels. There are examples in the Useful links thread.

How often do you see your GP and do you test your blood at all? Testing is one of the best ways to understand how diabetes affects you personally (we're all that little bit different!), but many doctors are reluctant to prescribe strips because of the expense.

Please feel free to ask anything that is worrying or confusing you - or just have a good old rant! We'll do our best to support you and allay your concerns 🙂
