Missed my dinner today at work today. 3 cups of tea. Will enjoy my tea. On a pomp so can do

I thought diabetics weren't supposed to miss a meal. That's the only thing I knew about diabetes for years!

I miss meals all the time, easy for me though as I'm not on insulin. I actually find that IF, along with the other things I'm doing, helps my BG numbers (except when I fell off the wagon last Saturday night & woke up with FBG of 6.2... Nice 4.4 this morning)

I'm not on a pump, and only a year in since DX, but I find if I skip meals it actually causes my bgs to rise, plus don't you get hangry?

I can easily miss meals on MDI / basal bolus, too - just omit short acting insulin jab. You're right to keep hydrated with tea or anything else. Well, not alcohol instead of any food.

When I was very young my Mother used to get 50grms of carbs into me before school. I can assure you that when I don't want to something I wont. I actually don't like carbs & sticky Toffee c---. 6 pints of milk regularly. Copepod I used to be on MDI you know.

I looked less than 10 mins ago & it was not there ? 😉 Thank you Copepod.

Can you imagine what it was like Copepod ! My Mother HAVING to give me 4 meals a day of 50grms. 3 slices of bread each meal & a child who was sick sick of eating to KEEP ALIVE. This was the sixties. Please DONT talk to me about being respectful ?

That's interesting Lucy.

Have you ever fasting-tested your basal insulin? I wonder if your basal might be a smidge too low and you are covering the difference (during waking hours) with a little extra insulin from your meals.

Ideally your basal (either on MDI or in a pump) should hold you more or less level in-between meals, whether you are eating or not so that missing meals should be absolutely fine. (see http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120)

As Hobie says the older/earlier insulins often needed to be 'fed' to avoid hypos because the insulin was in and you had to eat to match it whether you wanted to or not. Modern MDI/pump treatment systems are so much more flexible.

Thank you for the information, I will look into this and do a day and night basal test. I've only recently changed my basal to split doses of Levermir so will see what's going on. 🙂

One of the greatest days of my life when after more than 20 years of feeding the insulin I went onto MDI and could miss meals and didn't need three snacks each day.

Me too. I can remember checking and checking again and then confirming with the nurse that I could just have a salad for lunch if I wanted, no carbs? No mid am and pm snacks unless I want to? No fixed carbs at meals? Really?.....wow! I think I proabably skipped out of that appointment! 🙂

The feeling you get when YOU are in charge & Not food or insulin is mind blowing is it not 😎:D

I was diagnosed in the 60's and had proper cooked meals only time bread appeared was tea time which was always sarnies due to cooked school dinner and once in Snr school the meals were so yuck we opted for packed lunch so had cooked in the evening.
I was never forced to eat meals either. If I didn't want to eat I didn't have the soluble insulin.

I am a VERY determined person & diagnosed in 1966. If I don't want to eat I would not as a child. A lot of days I used to have up to 6pts of milk a day. Did not break any bones till I was about 28 :D😉

I was never given the option about eating....my mum was told that I had to eat all of the meals and snacks, the only exception was when she had to wake me up at 10pm to give me a glass of milk. Mum did everything the way she was told to do it, bless her.
