Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there...
sorry in advance for the long post but I really need some advice as I feel like Ive no where else to turn right now.
Ive just had a really terrible few days with awful symptoms and to be honest Im scared that Im putting my health at risk.

I have no formal diagnosis from my doctor as yet but I strongly believe he is letting me down as i ended up at A&E last Wednesday feeling very unwell with all blood results coming back suggesting I have diabetes (I think) Please do correct me if I am wrong though as my only knowledge has come from google searching.
Fasting - 9.2
Hba1c - 48
Random BG of 16.4 and 20.6
These are the recorded results from the hopsital...however I was released from hospital before these blood results had come back from the lab..in good faith that my own Gp would carry on any further treatment and diagnosis if neccessary.

So the following day I became really unwell again with all the same symptoms..I was very faint, sweat was pouring off me, words were slurry, could barely stand, mouth dry and intense migraine..to the point I had to have my 6 year old speak on the phone to my eldest daughter because I was literally due to pass out. They took me down to my Gp and he was completely dismissive of my symptoms and told me to go about my life as normal until the blood results come back.
The following day my Gp phones me with the blood results above and said because the Hba1c is only 48 and "borderline" this basically cancels out the other fasting and random tests which were higher? Does this make any sense? I understand the A1c is an average of the last 3 months however I havent been feeling like this for 3 month? Im worried about where I am right now! Once again his only advice was that I should go about my life as normal!
This just doesnt seem right to me? and I did question this..asking how can I possibly carry on as normal when everytime I eat my blood sugar is spiking up really high and I feel really unwell..like unable to function level of unwell. He said I just have to put my trust in the knowledge that he is the proffessional and knows better than me. At one point he got super angry and said something along the lines of "you will always gets people who want to **** the system" What does that even mean..what is it he thinks I am trying to do??
I think he must think I am desperate to have diabetes or desperate for the drugs or something...I really dont know..but he has made me feel awful, Ive been in tears all weekend, terrified to eat and feeling like an idiot. Believe me I am not looking for any more illness or bad health, ive already had my fair share but I feel I cant ignore this..as its making me ill and it is distressing for my kids aswell as me.
I have bought myself a little blood monitor thing to check on my own in the meantime..for peace of mind or at least to try and keep it as low as possible.
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated..

First - forget consulting your GP if you feel you might pass out - that is when you use the emergency services. Leave the back door unlocked if it accessible from the front of the house
However - if you are type two, your high blood glucose levels come from eating carbohydrate, and many type two's can restore normality by eating low carb foods and restricting their intake to about 50 gm of carbs per day.
A Hba1c of 48 is officially diabetic - it can't be cancelled out - that is the diagnostic test.
However - if you do not have confirmation that you are type two, you might need further tests to determine just what is going on.

Hi Miss Mollii. I get what you are saying about your HbA1c . It’s a three month average, and if you’ve only just developed these high levels, it won’t yet be reflected in the HbA1c figure. There is always a possibility that it's not Type 2, but a lot of GPs never see an adult who has developed Type1, and think that it’s something children get. (There are a fair number of us on here who developed it in our 40s and 50s, and most of us were misdiagnosed to start with) So perhaps try and ask if he’s considering Type 1, and if he doesn’t think it could be possible, ask him whether he’s familiar with Theresa May!
It may turn out to be a type 2, in which case, Drummer is right, cutting down on your carb intake will help. But if you continue to feel unwell, or as if you’re wading through treacle when you walk, or you have headaches and nausea, get yourself back to A&E promptly!

I agree with Drummer and Robin - but would add, don't have ANY sugar in hot drinks or drink any cold drinks with sugar ( so no non 'Diet' ones) in fact - you'd be best off drinking plain old tap water.

My thoughts are if you are type2 reduce your carbs as Drummer has suggested and you should feel better - check out diabetes UK food recipes on what to eat: Definitely reduce white bread, pasta and white rice but if you do have any at all have very small portion of brown, bread, pasta or rice. Burgen bread if you must have bread.

Cereals can be really high in sugars and carbs so anything you buy prepackaged check the back for carb content, cakes, crisps white bread, potatoes are really high in carbs for instance.

So if you are feeling better in a few days you can bet it is was your blood glucose being too high.

If you are still getting symptoms as bad as you say you need to go to A&E as Robin suggests or if you are unsure 111 service at the very least, let them know your symptoms and recent blood glucose test results.

Hope things are resolved for you, and you are feeling better soon

When my blood glucose were recently high my vision was affected, I was very tired and very dry mouth and urinating more than usual.

Thankyou so much for your replies. I really just felt at a loss over this weekend..and my trust in my Gp is now zero, he was down right rude and unprofessional and considering he has misdiagnosed me twice before in the passed I really should have learned my lesson and moved by now but I will definately start the ball rolling with that tomorrow.
I think i just needed someone else to say Im not being unreasonable and that my results do warrant some further investigation and at the least some advice on how to manage them.
I dont deal well with confrontation like that though and my anxiety is through the roof right now because of it.
Ive not long eaten a low carb dinner and I can already feel the headache building...paracetamol doesnt even touch the pain. Is there any fast acting ways to bring your blood sugar down? Does drinking water help?

Hi Mollie, please listen to what your body is telling you. irrelevant of what your GP is saying, if you feel that bad and you are also in charge of young children then you need help ASAP. Please let us know how you get on. X

Yes drinking water helps, what was in your recent load carb meal and do you eat the same thing often? Have you developed a food allergy I wonder.... just me thinking out loud.

I eat quite

Id say I eat quite a varied diet but that does include quite a bit of carbs, our evening family meal would typically include something like potatoes, pasta, rice etc.
This evening I have eaten a stirfry with mostly chicken, mushroom, onion, peppers and a small amount of rice added...I dont have scales ro weigh and measure yet as this is all new but id say my portion was less than half a cup of cooked rice.
Blood glucose is 16.3 just now and my head is sore again but no other symptoms at the minute

Most 'hard core' low carbers would use 'cauli rice' - or steam some frozen cauliflower and then chop it fairly finely - I have a posh 'demi-lune' knife for such things but just using a fairly long bladed knife gives the same effect, then drop it into the pan for half a minute to reheat.
Going low carb has an almost instant effect, it takes the pressure off your poor hysterical pancreas - but it is possible to develop types of diabetes which require insulin later in life, and although low carb can help a bit, if you need insulin there is no other option.
