Sorry but am moaning again!
Am getting really fed up with being diabetic now. We've joined the Ramblers and went for our first walk yesterday. Despite having a big breakfast before the walk, I still ended up having a hypo. So had to eat whilst walking.
Plus started having hypos at work at about 11am - but not sure why. But am now having hypos most days now.
Still too scared to run on my own (we live in a small village and the running group only runs 1 a week and I don't want to hold them back) - in case of hypos.
Plus getting fed up with having to carry so much stuff around (I'll need a wheeled-trolley at this rate!!) - so much preferred being pre-diabetic coz I could run/walk when I wanted and only carried my mobile and a water bottle!!
Could I turn back the clock by 4 years please???
 
Have you been adjusting your doses for increased activity?

I've needed to reduce basal generally since it has got colder (which is a bit odd as many peeps get that when the temp rises)

If you are having hypos most days it seems like you need to be taking less insulin.
 
Precisely my thought, you are on too much insulin - which if you're on MDI and only one jab a day of long acting, it may be easier/more pragmatic to reduce your brekkie bolus, but in any case, I prescribe a basal test so you can actually see what the basal insulin is doing for you all morning.

Hi Susie,
as others have said reduce your insulin. Start with your basal.🙂
The more active you become the less insulin you will need.
Use a bum bag to carry your meter,test strips and hypo treatment.
 
I here you, i find it very depressing, and like you i have always been active, not with running but everything else, they give you all this stuff to look after the diabiets but they dont realise we could do with a very compact design.
Have you spoke to you nurse about going on the pump?? in one way it gets in the way, but you get used to it.
But the good side is you background insulin is the normal fast acting stuff that is delivered 24 hours a day. two yearsi did a 100 mile sponsered bike ride (i normaly only bike around 3-4 miles) and i just went on the pump settings and reduced my basel, the same now when i take the dog for a walk, sometimes i take him for a good few miles over fields, i just reduce my basel, dont need any planing.

Some ideas to to help reduce the "case full ofstuff"

True do a very small monitor "twist" not the best, but i have one as a back up, i put some strips in a small bag, the lancet is very small and screws together (so dont come to bits in your pocket) My nurse has put the strips on my perscription. This is not my main monitor (as mine works with the pump) but its a good back up.

What hypo stuff do you carry?? i take lucozade tablets (i find 3 =around 10 grams) again small and stick in your pocket.

The other thing you can do is take a small bottle of coke, and while you run take a small sip, do this a few times and keep checking you b/s and you will find how much and when works with you.

But your not alone, we all understand what your goind through.
 
Sorry to hear that you are feeling like this. With regard to equipment before going on the pump I used an accuchek testing machine which combines the testing strips, testing machine and finger pricier in one. It's really convenient and not too big. For hypos I carry jelly babies as they are also very small. As others have said please reduce your insulin to stop the 11am hypos. Take care xx

I will reduce my morning doses and see what happens. Although the consultant had told me to increase my 5-6am dosage to avoid waking up with too high a level - but that's still not working either.

I'm already on the insulin pump but tend to turn it off before I run/walk so that I don't get any insulin - but still get hypos. The consultant said to eat before I run but I find anything more than a couple of slices of toast gives me cramp!🙄

I usually carry jelly-babies with me when I run but needed them plus crisps for my walk. I don't mind lugging stuff around when I walk but hate carrying much when I run! It was the freedom of running without carrying lots of stuff that I enjoyed - but I suppose like everything else it's just something I'll have to get used to!

Sorry but now I feel like I'm nothing but a diabetic and that's all people see me as - when they're used to be more to me than that!
 
It sounds to me as if you need to do some serious basal testing...... info in the pump forum as a sticky 🙂
How long before your run or walk do you reduce your basal?
 
Oh Suzie - sorry to hear how you are feeling.

But the good news is that you are on a pump, so with the basal testing sticky that Sue has suggested, plus a little TBR and dose-reduction experimentation I'm sure that you'll be able to crack exercise in a few months.

Basal first. Then the other adjustment safter that.

Interestingly I also disconnect when at the gym (an hour or so) but I make sure I set a TBR for an hour before that too - so the net basal is 35-40% for 2+ hours. Along with that (since I exercise soon after breakfast) I also reduce my breakfast bolus.

Hope that you work out a system that works for you soon.
 
Beat me to it Sue, I was thinking that re what Suzie said about changing the hourly rate not reducing her FBG.

There is more to you than that, look at what you put up with, and your still not giving in. You go past some people who let them-selves go, and it just requires a bit of effort from them, but you are not giving in, your still running, walking keeping fit, only you have a more uphill battel to do it.
If you have children, what an example you will be setting them. Nothing wrong with feeling down, but you also feel proud of yourself, your no quiter and more of an insperation to the people around you.
