Since being recently diagnosed, I have been testing and keeping a comparative log of what if anything gives rise to spikes.

I took a 90 minute reading of the following main meal [lunch] Steak, sweet potato wedges mixed veg, onion, mushroom, sweet pepper, one mini magnum ice cream, one small glass red wine, 2 cups espresso coffee; the reading was 6.7.

The same evening I had two slice Burgen soya & linseed bread, thin spread of lite Philadelphia cheese, the reading, 90 minutes later 8.2. To say I was surprised was putting it mildly

Any comments

Hi mcabee, as I understand it as a relative newbie, the protein in your steak would have slowed down the digestion and therefor the carbs you had would not have spiked so fast.

The carbs in the evening, ie the Burgen, whilst being low GI, would still appear to have been absorbed faster, although the fat in the cheese would slow it down to what it was, maybe worth just trying one slice and see if its better reading.

The red wine could have affected things. Your Liver drips glucose into your blood stream (well it produces the hormones that cause this to happen), but when you drink it prioritises removing the alcohol from your system over the glucose release.

I was told when first diagnosed that the reason people who are drunk crave chips or curry and rice is because the body is trying to boost their blood sugar.

Hi Slipper
Many thanks now I begin to understand.

Cheers

Yes Margie - the Saturday night munchies!

It's also necessary to know your blood glucose level before each meal, as it's the difference pre and post meal that matters more than absolute numbers in determining what meals are good for you.

As you're recently diagnosed, you may not have been educated about fats and saturated fats. They will play havoc with you hba1c levels. I managed to kick mine down from 14.5 to 6.9 and I want them to go down further.

I go for my first diabetic clinic visit at the surgery this week, so should find out more about my HbA1c levels.
