Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Please can someone help me! I myself have Type 2 diabetes and use insulin. The insulin I use is given as a dose in a morning and one at my evening meal! I change it by two units after a few days of being out of range if needed. However, I also have a little boy that I help at school. He is type 1 diabetic! His diet is poor and we are left to work out carbs for him. Please can you tell me what number we need to use when working out his carbs from a packet?! Do we go with the big number next to carbohydrates or do we use the number against the ‘of sugars’ ? Thank you in advance!

When carb counting (to calculate how much insulin to inject), we count all the carbohydrates. The “of sugars” is irrelevant because the body breaks down ALL carbohydrates.

That’s perfect! That’s what we’ve been doing but his blood sugars go up and down so dramatically I wondered if we had been working out the carbs incorrectly! Thank you. My mind is back at ease!
