Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Sorry .. think my 1st post was on the wrong thread !!!

Here it is again ...

Good morning all.
Thought I would join and annoy every one with many questions about "type 2" .. lol
I have been getting tested the last few weeks for diabetes and the docs have finally confirmed type 2 but are monitoring me for another week as there is a high chance that they might have caught type 1 at a late stage.
I am on the blood glucose test for the next 6 days and my 1st reading this morning was 14.2.

Enjoy your day all & thanks for having me

Hi Vid, Welcome to the forum.🙂

How did you come to be diagnosed? What’s the story? It’s always interesting to hear.🙂

And don’t thank us for having you, we’re unapologetically promiscuous, anyone can join in.:D

Best of luck, and you have a good day too. New day, new adventure.

Hello MikeyB & thanks for the welcome.
I have been having pains in my leg and foot joints for around 6 months then my right foot became numb to the touch but I used to get bad night cramps in the foot and legs so I just thought I might have damaged a nerve or something. I battled on through due to being a bloke and no time due to work but it then started to affect my sleeping. If i woke up during the night I could not get back to sleep each evening so this is when I visited the docs. After 2 nurse visits, 1 doctor visit then another nurse with a doctor on Wed 18th and they looked at the last of my blood results they decided that I tested positive. Only yesterday though did someone actually asked to look at my foot that I cannot feel ! ... I took my shoe and socks off yesterday and the look on the nurses face was a picture !!!😱😱😱 ... She was trying for a pulse but looked unsure, went and got another nurse, then a doctor and they all said that my foot looked near enough "DEAD" .. They could hardly detect a pulse they said. They called a specialist at the local hospital to see if I had to go down but that specialist just advised to put me on Glucophage, 500mg, 1 a day, Naproxen pain killers & Omeprazole. Nobody at my surgery has advised diets, what I should and should not eat so I am very confused at the minute :( I have another appointment on Wed next week and on Thursday I need to go for a diabetic retinopathy screening test ... happy days !!!

Welcome, please let us know how you get on and if we can be of any help

Hi and welcome.
That foot situation sounds scary! I hope you see some improvement with the medication.
I have only recently been diagnosed and they still have to determine what type (ie type 2 or 1 or somewhere in between) The advice they gave me about diet was not overly helpful (Low Fat, Low Sugar, Low Salt, Low Alcohol, small complex wholemeal carbohydrates) in that my Blood Glucose did not respond to it or the medication. I have found that all carbs raise my BG and the complex ones (starchy foods) just keep it permanently high, so I have reduced that to an absolute minimum and only have a small portion of potatoes or wholemeal pasta or wholemeal bread once a day.... no cake, biscuits, sweets, pies or crisps etc . I am managing to balance things much better like that and I am getting my sweet tooth under control but everyone is different and you have to find out what works for you. I start my day on a 3 egg mushroom omelette with salad leaves and avocado and that sets me up for the day apart from a chunk of cheese or a handful of nuts or a few berries and some Greek yoghurt and then I have a normal meal with meat or fish, veg and potatoes or pasta etc in the evening. I don't even crave sweet stuff most of the time anymore and I don't feel deprived when I start the day with such a great breakfast. It took me a while to get my head around not having carbs like bread through the day but it is surprising how you adjust and I certainly feel better for it as well as lowering my BG readings.

Have you been given a Blood Glucose Test Meter. If not ask for one. If they cannot give you one and you can afford to buy one, testing regularly is the only way to figure out which foods are the biggest problem and adjust your diet accordingly.

What is your current diet like and do you need to lose weight as those two factors will help you figure out your best approach.

Hi all.
I have not shown any symptoms, I am not overweight, not really active until the weekends when I can get time to get out and about.
It will be hard for me I think to switch to eating leafs everyday. I love my roasts, ribs, steaks, etc . I did like the energy drinks (maybe 2 a day), had a couple of bars of chocolate a day and maybe some crips but I have not had any of this stuff for around 2 weeks, I dont need them. I had a tough day today though, :( both legs have been very sore all day, never managed out till later this afternoon for a long walk to try and ease the pain.
Hope you all have a good weekend .

I don't think roasts, ribs or steaks are a problem as long as you cut right back on the chips, spuds, bread and pasta, especially if you are not overweight. Energy drinks and chocolate are definitely not good, so you have done well to cut back on those. I had an horrendously sweet tooth before diagnosis and was eating way too much chocolate and sweets and I could even consume a whole tin of condensed milk with a spoon on a bad day. It is really nice to be free of that sugar addiction now and it hasn't been nearly as difficult as I expected to break the habit.
When you say your legs are sore, do you mean muscle fatigue or sore to the touch or aching? I hope the walk helped to ease them and enjoy the remainder of the bank holiday weekend. Ideal weather to treat yourself to a barbeque.... don't forget mushrooms, peppers, aubergines, courgette and tomatoes go nice on the barbie as well as meat, especially if you are not keen on salad leaves.
