Hi all, I was diagnosed type 2 in August following severe decrease in my eye sight. I feel like I am taking so many tablets that I rattle as I move!! I'm on 4 Metformin a day plus 3 gliclazide. My levels can be anything from 9-22 with no obvious pattern. I have lost 2 stone since being diagnosed and am very careful about what I eat. My dr said I should eat a small portion of carbs with each meal but then I have read lots of other websites and books that say not to. Finding it all really overwhelming and it appears to take over my every thought! Is it normal to be feeling like this at this stage? (Realise it is early days)

Hi Sally and welcome to the forum. It's perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed. I'm almost 15 months since diagnosis and still learning something every day.

I got diagnosed in August and quite often fee; overwhelmed - I was going to do a post myself asking if other people feel the same...
It's hard enough trying to control your blood sugar without your GP throwing in lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, only prescribing 18 days worth of needles then refusing to renew your prescription because its less than 28 days since you last had some... Then the doctor at the eye hospital reminding me about major organ failure and limb amputation if I don't look after myself...
Final straw for me was at the Diabetic Clinic, seeing the doctor for the first time this week. My blood sugars were 97% in range and instead of saying "well done Dave, keep this up" I got told that perhaps I may still be producing some insulin and I may have type 2 too! My brain melted thinking about how that's gonna work...
Rambling rant over. I think my point was to say "yes, we all feel like that at times". This place seems a good place to hang out - lots of helpful advise from friendly folks...

Hi Sals, welcome to the group.....

There is a lot to take in at first but this group is very supportive. Please ask any questions, it's unlikely that nobody will have any suggestions or advice....

Hi Sal...please be assured that what you're feeling is completely normal. Congratulations on your weigh loss by the way...most impressive and bound to help in all sorts of ways.

You won't believe it at the moment but you'll get there Sals. This diagnosis messes with your head and puts you on a massive steep learning curve but it sounds like you're already doing all the right things.

You don't have to have carbs with every meal either. As long as you're not leaving yourself hungry, you eat to suit yourself and your meter (home testing is the only way to go in my opinion).

Good luck!

Thank you all for your welcome and helpful messages. Feel much better now I've joined this forum. Am now testing after meals to start to see the effect of particular foods. And breathe...

Hi Sals, & welcome to the forum.🙂

I'm 44 years in - and STILL learn things I didn't know and of course all sorts of new discoveries about this that and the other happen on an ongoing basis. Keep an open mind and gradually learn what's right for YOU.

There's no rush, this is a marathon - not a sprint ! And anything that you aren't sure about - ask, ask, ask until you are.

I was diagnosed in August too (on 4x Metformin). Reading 'The Blood Sugar Diet' Dr Mosley discusses how weight loss can lower the visceral fat round your organs and help improve their efficiency. Perhaps, and just perhaps, your pancreas is making a bit more insulin?

Welcome to the forum. Carpe Diem!

Hi. My husband has bought me that book and it is really useful. Thank you.

August is a dangerous month it seems - I was diagnosed in August too, the Tuesday/Wednesday before the Munich Olympics started ! GP said I had it on Tuesday evening and to present myself on Ward C5 at the hospital (this was the way back then) where they extracted an armful of blood pdq and came back later bearing the gift of my first insulin jab. Thanks for nothing, love!
