WOMEN of all ages, shapes and sizes are being urged to get their running shoes on and take on Cancer Research UK?s Race For Life 2014.

With entry forms now available, the event organisers are hoping to attract more people than ever to take part in the athletic challenge.

The Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5km, 10km and Pretty Muddy events, which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund life-saving research.

Claire Wase, the charity?s events manager, said: ?We?re calling on North East mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year?s Race for Life.

Not just North East England, but all over UK - search here if interested http://raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org/index.html

Training plans are useful, even if not aiming for a Cancer Research Race for Life event.

A male friend of mine was very disappointed a couple of years ago to discover that it's for women only. He's really not the running type, but wanted to run in memory of his Mum, who had died that year from cancer. Why cut out half the population?

I'm sure you can find him a suitable distance race / run for your male friend, Northerner. Or suggest to him that he search by charity eg specific cancer from which his Mum died or cancer care / hospice / end of care charity that helped eg Macmillan or local hospice or Cancer Research UK which has lots of events in addition to Race for Life series - see http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/support-us/find-an-event

Well, it's a few years ago now. His point was that he wanted to be in a race that was exclusively for those touched by cancer, which I do understand.

All those suggestions could reveal events exclusively for people touched by cancer. Did he run at all in memory of his Mum? Perhaps he could run now, as a 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 year anniversary.

Although I don't want to race exclusively against women, I can understand why some women, especially those new to running, might feel happier not being far behind lots of men, although they'd probably be in front of some men and women, too. As well as fundraising and memory, part of the aim of Race for Life is to increase participation in physical activity among women, some of whom are discouraged by men wolf whistling in streets, in gyms etc.
