Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, I am new to this forum, my name is Vanessa Haydock and I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for 18 years (diagnosed at the age of 3). I am currently a peer support volunteer for Diabetes UK providing information on the condition and personal experiences. I am currently in my last year of university studying psychology, whereby I am currently conducting my dissertation research, based on Diabetes and Body esteem, aiming to find whether there is a link. I would be very grateful if any diabetics (type 1 or 2) could possibly take out 10 minutes of their time to complete my questionnaire with regards to my dissertation topic. I asked Diabetes UK to help me out forwarding the questionnaire online, however they were unable to do so due to the fact I am an undergraduate, therefore I am hoping that I will be able catch the attention of diabetics on this forum. The link is:

I would be so grateful if any of you could take your time out to fill it in,

Thanks!

Vanessa

Sorry it was a bit long and a bit intrusive about other medical problems. Plus the questions on body image are a bit difficult. When I was young I gloried in my body, but what I felt when I was younger was a different thing to what I feel now. Now I have a negative image due to severe damage sustained in an accident. I was unable to express this so I gave up, however it's nothing to do with diabetes. Plus ageing is always difficult.

I didn't give up, but also found a lot of the questions irrelevant and there wasn't N/A as an option. Some of the questions were repeated. The exercise questions implied gym workouts, whereas it can be part of normal life e.g. walking/cycling as a means of transport. My own body image issues have changed dramatically with major weight loss and this is only indirectly associated with diabetes (I could have made an effort to do it without the T2 diagnosis). Perhaps a smaller piece of qualitative research might clear up some of the issues.

Hi

A section for comments following the body image bit would be useful. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, the same week, I was also diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma - a brain tumor on the acoustic nerve, to remove it they had to severe the acoustic nerve, which left me with severe facial palsy and partial deafness. This was twenty years ago and although at first I hated having my photo taken I soon got over this, I also never a worried about other people, after all it's better than being dead!

Regards
AJ

Strongly agree with your point re a small piece of qual research being needed. This is a very emotive subject, and personally, I think it's very difficult to capture the nuances in a quantitative questionnaire where everything has to fit into pre determined boxes ..... But that's my opinion 🙂
