Hi, as newly diagnosed and having started my metformin journey what would an average ‘good’ blood sugar test reading should be. Just trying to work out the ‘healthy range’. I’m currently fluctuating between 5.9 and 7.5. I appreciate we are all different but just wondered.

Fasting < 6.0 ideally
Post meal (2 hours) < 8.5
Pre-meal 4-7

Those figures look OK. What was your hba1c when you were diagnosed?

Thank you. My hba1c was 113 and off memory my initial finger test readings were between 10 and 13 so I know the diet changes and introduction of metformin are working but I wasn’t sure where my readings were in the grand scheme of things. Thanks for the response. Feel much happier!!

I’m currently on 500mg of metformin twice a day and due to increase next week to 3 tablets a day. Will keep in testing to see how I go on with increased dose.

Sounds like your levels have improved really well since your diagnosis @Purdey

Am I right in thinking you were only diagnosed in May?

Do you have a follow-up appointment organised at any point? It’s common to have another check up after 3 or 6 months to see how things are getting on.

When are you checking your BGs? Do you have a schedule you are following? Are you finding the blood checks helpful?

Hi, sorry for not replying sooner. I’ve just had my first 3 month review and doctors advised my hba1c is now down to 50 so they are really pleased as it had been 113 initially. I won’t lie, it’s been hard to follow new way of eating sometimes, but having this result keeps me focussed. Really appreciate the support from this group

Thanks for the update @Purdey

And congratulations on your terrific HbA1c reduction. Keep doing what you are doing!

That's a pretty incredible reduction, well done.
