My pre-meal reading tonight before my evening meal was 6.2 and then 2HPM it was 8.0 (after eating some salad and 100g portion of quiche). Is the rise an 'acceptable' rise? if it was say a 9 or 10 would that be a spike? How many millimols should the rise be?

That is a very acceptable rise Carina! I would say that an increase of 3-4 mmol/l was OK too, as it can be very difficult to get it right every time. My levels frequently rise 4 mmol or more because of the difficulty in matching my insulin peak to my food peak.

From what I understand a rise of 3 mmol/L is OK for a diabetic and ideally you want to keep the post-meal under 8 mmol/L.

Therefore if you are going above 8 mmol/L with a +3 meal, then it the pre-meal that needs work more then the meal itself.

But it all comes down to personal targets and preferences.

Pre-meal 4-7, 2hrs after 5-10 is what I was told, so you are well within limits.

Diabetes UK has guidelines on bg targets.

Adults with Type 1 - 4-7 before meals, no more than 9 at 2 hours after.

Children with Type 1 - 4-8 pre-meal and under 10 at 2 hours.

Adults with Type 2 - 4-7 before meals and no more than 8.5 at 2 hours after.

oops posted twice

Just had a look at the figures I was given when I was first diagnosed 8 yrs ago. 4-7 and no more than 10 two hours after a meal, now I'm told it is 9. Oh it's a pain in the butt all this chopping and changing.

This is for a T1, so it's slightly different, but I was told that there should only be a deviation of 1mmol/l either way, as a way of testing if your bolus was right. So if you started on 6, then 5 or 7 was acceptable. For a T2, if you're not on insulin, then I'd say you're probably ok 🙂
