Type 2
Hello everyone, I have a question about whether anyone knows of any research into T2 - particularly when it is not lifestyle acquired.
I am 38 and was diagnosed over 5 years ago. Age related T2 is in both sides of my family and my doctors are all agreed that the issue is genetic for me (Initially it was thought I had a really slow developing version of T1). I must be looking in the wrong places because I haven't been able to find any published research into non lifestyle or age related T2 and it's quite frustrating.
Any pointers would be appreciated, thanks 🙂

Hello, Amanda and welcome to the forum. There's a lot of research being done at Exeter University on MODY, which is a strongly genetic form ( or several forms, in fact ) of Type 2. We have a couple of MODY members on the forum, who probably know more.

Hi Amanda, welcome to the forum 🙂 The truth of the matter is that it is ALL related to genetics, so any research that suggests it isn't is pretty worthless! Lifestyle factors can increase risk of developing it, but you would also need to have the right genes for those factors to cause diabetes. If it was down to lifestyle alone then every overweight person would develop Type 2 - the majority of them don't, only those with the appropriate genetic heritage. Or is that not what you were asking?

I too was going to suggest the Exter MODY team.
It seems at times that is reported on regularly that new genes implicated in Type 2 Diabetes are found. It has been known for some time that thoose with it in the family are more likely to develop.

Hi. Yes, the T2 collection of conditions is complex. Can I ask what persuaded you that you haven't got Late onset T1? Mine took around 7 years to go from nothing to needing insulin so LADA can have quite along honeymoon period.

Hi, I have been diagnosed as MODY, this is due to a long family history of diabetes on my fathers side, I also intentionally lost 7 stone in weight before diagnosis, I had no symptoms prior to being diagnosed despite a HbA1c of 127 and metformin made no difference to my bg levels even when I was on the maximum dose. This led my gp to believing I was MODY.

Take my own family. Everyone on my mother's side had or has type 2. That includes my maternal grandmother, my aunts, uncles, cousins plus my two sisters and myself. One of my sister's decided she did not want it and spent all her life watching what she ate and exercised every day, in various different ways, walked, swam, gym, weights, aerobics, you name it she did it. We all became diabetic around 40 - 45 years of age (including my son now), but she did not become diabetic until she was about 55 - 60. So all that perfect lifestyle just prolonged her getting it for about 10/15 years (which is good but she still developed it). I have a friend who is 4' 11" and is 23 stone. She eats extremely high carb foods including lots of cakes and chocolate. She is 67 and is not even pre-diabetic. There is no diabetes in her family at all.
