If you use oil to cook with, what sort of oil do you use? I use extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin oil spray but i have heard that rapeseed oil is better to cook with - I'm confused!

I just use normal olive oil...although we do also have that low calorie spray thing!

I guess its just personal choice (like butter) as it doesnt affect the BGs its just the fat content you need to consider?

We like Olive Oil. Very good as it has mostly mono-unsaturates (which jiust go straight through!).

Other oils (eg ground nut) are better for stir-fries because they can cope better with high temps so it partly depends on what you are using it for. I've seen those oil sprays any always felt they looked like a good way or reducing the amount used, but I've never used them.

For things like pancakes i'll use butter, but otherwise I find the spray stuff to be great as it really just greases the pan rather than your typical oil shallow fry.

I tend to use sunflower oil 🙂 I seem to remember a tv chef saying you shouldn't cook with extra virgin olive oil as it's too expensive to use that way, virgin is better. I suppose it's like using good wine instead of 'cooking wine'.

I'll use the spray stuff for steaks, and combine it with water for mushrooms / onions etc. - but I think omelettes taste better with butter, and on the rare occasions when I want a fried egg or 2, I'll use sunflower - fried eggs with fry light are a disaster!! 😱

thanks for that peeps i might just keep a bottle of each rapeseed, sunflower and my usual virgin oil as a variety won't do any harm 🙂

Olive oil turns bitter if it gets too hot!

Normal Olive all for cooking and Extra virgin for dressings is my rule of thumb...

Also if I'm frying I use sunflower oil as olive will turn bitter what every quality you use..

I tend to use Olive oil for roasting or grilling purposes..

Omellets I use butter

Roast taddie it's got to be beef dripping or goose fat🙂

But fast hot foods such as stir fry's plumb for something like sesame or nut oil depending on what flavour you want they tollerate very hot heat better without going bitter
